How TO LIVE CHEAPLY.-Dr. Dio Lewis relates how he lived for a week on food that cost fifty-four and a quarter cents. He worked hard meantime, and gained half a pound. He took two meals a day. The following are specimen ones: Sunday, breakfast-hulled Southern oom, with a little milk; dinner, the esme; total cost, six cents. Tuesday, breakfast-two couts' worth of beaus, with a half ceut's worth of vinegar. Wednesday, dinner-two conta' worth of beef stew, a quarter of a cent's worth of popper, and a cent's worth of hominy pudding. Saturday, dinner-lobster, three cents; bread, one cent; hominy salad, one oent; cracked wheat and milk, two cents. Thia day he had a "spree" -cost, seven cents. THE GREAT DISTINCTION.-A little girl of five summers was the happy recipient of a velvet cloak, of whioh she was very proud. One day, soon afterwards, she was discussing her dresses, their beauty, style, ?co., when her mother, by way of sipping her vanity in the bud, said, "My dear, do you not know there are moro important things to talk about than dresses?" MONUMENT ASSOCIATION.-The Board of Directors of the South Carolina Monu? ment Association beg to announce that a concert in behalf of their association will be given in Columbia, early in Novem? ber. A number of oelebrated amateur performers of this pl?oe, besides seve? ral gentlemen from other parts of the State, have generously lent their services for tbe occasion. The programme and full particulars of the concert will be published some weeks prior to the fair, so that pursotiB residing in distant parts of the Statu may avail themselves of this opportunity to enjoy a rioh musical treat. The Monument Association has pur? chased a site for the Confederate monu? ment, and bopes soon to lay the corner? stone. A large sum is still needed to complete the work, and we appeal to all for aid-to those whose privilege it wan to fight by tho side of tho gallant dead whose deeds we commemorate; to the mothers and wives of these men; to their obildrou, who, in years to come, are to redeem South Carolina; and lastly, to those who love liberty and who honor tho past and pray for the future of our beloved State. C., September 20, J872.-The Board of Directors of the South Carolina Mouument Association, encouraged by tbe success of the bazaar, last year, and yielding to the urgent request of a great,, number of persons, Uko pleusure in announcing that they will open a "monument restaurant" at the fair grounds, on the first day of the fair, and will not close their sales until after the distribution of prizes..
