The intelligence from Maioo is cheering. Republicuus whom I meet admit that in that State they will not more than 'bold their owu,' as compared with last year. This will amount to a virtual dofeat, and makes tho State a doubtful oue io the November contest. Tho dofoat of Hartranft for Governor in Pennsylvania is also couoeded. In fact, the ebb-tide in tho fortunes of the Libo ral movement, of which wo Ln.vo latterly heard so ruuob, has ceased, and promises to bo followed by a gmit-.-r flood than before. Tbe power and infiueuco of I Grant's corruption fuud beena to have become exhausted already, and from this time out, it will be impossible to main? tain the drooping fortunes of that party. This is according to tbe evidences whiol. come within my personal observation. The malcontents in this city, who are 1 endeavoring to achieve local oflioo | through an understanding and co-opera? tion with the supporters of Grant, will have little influence, and I think will cheat Grant badly." John G. Saxe writes to the Albany Argtis: "I do not Qnd any Democrat who thinks the Louisville gathering is likely to pay what it will cost the Go? vernment at Washington (or rather at Lon?; Branch) to get it up; nor any Re? publican who supposes ?that Gen. Dix, for all his years and yearning for place, can do more than run a little behind a tioket that is doomed to be defeated by not less than 75,000 votes. (N.B. Make a note of this prediction, which is not so much mine as that of at leuat twenty cool heads, long accustomed to observe the chances and changea of po? lities in New York.) As to the result of the Grant and Greeley canvass, the most hopeful thing I have heard from any ohampion of the Administration, is the declaration thus: 'It is going to be a hard fight and a dose vote.' " A California newspaper prints the fol? lowing touohing obituary: "Philip Hanscomb was driving a team loaded1 with powder, np the Sierra Nevada Mountains. One of the kegs dropped from the wagon. The Sierra stood it . well enough, but the miners who came from a neighboring ranohe were unable to find Mr. Hansoomb or the team."
