THE DAILY ''Let our inst Centrares BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., FRIDAY MORNING, AUGUST 9, 1872. Attend the True Event." VOL. VIII-NO. 121. JOHN CHINAMAN IN CALIFORNIA-MAKE THE BEST OP HIM.-The San Francisco Republican has the following: Say what we will, whether we like it or not, for weal or for woe, the China man is with UH, and is bound to take no small part in the history of California's future. Their numbers aro not increasing at presont, but will probably do so ne tho facilities for their coming aro enlarged, and the commercial relations between the two countries become more close and profitable. "John" now pervades all the land. lu some places, he possesses whole miniug districts abandoned by white men, and in others he does nearly all the labor of the husbandman. He builds railroads and digs canals, cooks, washes, mindB babies, makes cigars, shoes, &c, Seo. ; and in whatever pursuit he follows he is in? dustrious-will work longer and cheaper and live more frugally than any other olaeB of laborers. We do not say this by way of eulogy, bat merely state a fact known and acknowledged by all. For years, in San Francisco, the Chi? namen were almost exclusively engaged as laundrymen. Then they came to be employed as house servants, now they have taken to almost every other branch of industry, and succeed in nearly all. They almost monopolize the fish and vegetable peddling business, and have an almost as complete monopoly of slip? per and ci gar-m ak in g. They are also sign-painters, bag-sewers, carpenter*, carvers, cabinet-makers, &o. Of oonrse, they will continue to euler into these and other branches of manual industry, until scarcely any will be ex? empt from their influences, perhaps not even the printing office. The Memphis Avalanche pays this touching tribute to a contemporary in anguish: "We thought he would, but he didn't, and he wont. The truly able editor of the Brownsville Weekly Gree? ley be dam deolines to support the farm? er of Cbappaqua. He is a greater Gree ley-be-dammer than before the Balti? more Convention. He isn't for Greeley. He isn't for Grant. Ho isn't fer Train, nor for Victoria Woodhull. He isn't for anybody; so he just sits np on his hind legs and howls." PROGRESSION.-Wo learn from one of our Northern exchanges that one of the leading hotels at Saratoga has an apart? ment, elegantly fitted up, which is used exclusively as tho ladies' club or oard parlor; and one thing is certain, ladies do play curds hore, and play them for money, and do not hesitate to allude to the fact, just as openly and, for ought we know, as innocently as they confess of reading the daily papers. A traveler in Florida writes: "This is the land where towns consist of one house, where steamboats mike eight miles an hour, where the happy maxim rules, 'never do to-day what you can put off till to-morrow," where the mail comes semi-occasionally, where the newspaper is almost as rare as a snow storm, and where telegrams are unknown." Susan B. Anthony,, angelic spinster, is ! at great pains to advertise the fact that j she does not like Horace Greeley. It is one of tho peculiarities of Susan's long and eventful life that she never liked any man, and we guess Horace Greeley cuu stand it as long as she can. State of South Carolina-Union Co.
