Be il ordained, by the] Mayor and the Aldermen of the eily of Co? lumbia, in Council assembled, That Board of Health be, and the same is hereby, established, whioh shall consist of twelve members, to be chosen by bal? lot by the City Council,fat their first meeting in May of eooh and every year; and said Board shall be so choeen, that j three of them shall be elected from Ward No. 1, three from Word No. 2, three from Ward No. 8, and three from Ward No. 4, seven of whom shall oonBtitate a quorum; and if any person so elected a member of tbe Board of Healtb, shall refuse or neglect to perform the dutiee hereafter required, he shall, upon con? viction thereof before the City Counoil, forfeit and pay the Bum of forty-fivo dol? lars: Provided, That no person shall bo compelled to serve moro than one year in every three years. SEC. 2. lie il further ordained. That the said Board of Health, of whom seven shall constitute a quorum, shall meet at least occe a .fortnight from tho first day June to the first day of November of each and every year, and at such other times and at such places as they may deem necessary and convenient, for the purposo of receiving and communicat? ing all possible information relative tc tho health of the city, and to advise and consult together respecting the preserva? tion of the same; and shall have full and ample powers to adopt and curry inte effect al! such measures, rules and regu? lations as they may deem necessary to the dischargo of the trust hereby confided to them; and each and every practical physician within the city is hereby re I quired to give immediate :r'orination ol I tho existence of any contagious or malig? nant disease to the Board, or to any mem? ber thereof, and at all convenient times to aid and advise the said Board in thc preservation of tho health of the city, and in the preservation or suppression of contagious or malignant diseases. SEC. 3. Be it further ordained, That il shall be the duty of each and everj member of the said Board to cause to bc removed, from the streets within thc Ward under his or their charge, all of fensivo substances or nuisances tending to endanger tho health of the citizens ol tho city; and the Chief of Police and hil assistants, and the Superintendent of thc Streets, are hereby required, without de lay, to obey all orders or precepts tba shall be given them, or either of them by either of the members of the saic Board respecting the removal of sucl nuisances. SEO. 4.
