THE DAILY 'Let our just Censure? Attend the True Event." BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., SUNDAY MORNING, JUNE 9, 1872. VOL. VIII-NO. 70. Republican Flatform? The Republican party of the United States, assembled in National Conven? tion, in the oity of Philadelphia, on the 6th and 6th days of Jun?, 1872, again declares its faith, appeals to its history, and announces its position upon the questions before the country: 1. During eleven years of supremaoy it has accepted, with grand courage, the solemn duties of the times. It sup? pressed a gigantic rebellion, emancipated 4,000,000 slaves, decreed the equal oiti* zenship of all, established universal suf? frage. Exhibiting unparalleled magna? nimity, it criminally punished no man for political offences, and warmly wel? comed all who proved loyalty by obeying the laws and dealing justly with their neighbors. It has steadily decreased, with a firm hand, the resultant disorders of a great war, and initiated a wise, humane poliey toward the Indians. The Pacific Railroad, and similar vast enter? prises, have been generously aided and successfully copduoted; the public lands freely given to aotual settlers; immigra? tion protected and eucouraged, and a full acknowledgment of the neutralized citizen's rights secured from European powers. A uniform national currency has been provided; repudiation frowned down; tho national oredit sustained under, most extraordinary burdens, and new bonds negotiated at lower rates. . The revenues have boon carefully collect ed and honestly applied. Despite anuna large reduction of tho rate of tax, th? public debt has been reduced during Gen. Grant's Presidency at the rat? o $100,000,000 a year. Great finanoia cri?es have been avoided, and peace ant Sleety prevails throughout the land [enaoing foreign difficulties have beet . peacefully and honorably oomposed, an< tue honor and power of thc notice kep in high respect throughout the world And this glorious record of the past i the party's best pledge for the future We believe the people will not entrus the Government to any party or oombi nation of men composed chiefly of thoa who resisted every step of this beneficia progress. 2. Complete liberty and exact eqaalit; in the enjoyniuut of all civil, politics and public rights should be establishe and effectually maintained throughou the Union by efficient and appropri?t State and Federal legislation. Neithe the law nor its administration shonl admit of any discrimination in respec of citizens by reason of raco,"creec color or previous condition. 3. The recent amendments to the Nc tional Constitution should be cordiall sustained because they are right, n< merely located, because they are lav and should be carried out according I their spirit by appropriate legislotion the enforcement of which can safely t entrusted only to the party that secure those amendments. 4. The National Government shoal Beek to maintain honorable peace with c nations, protecting its citizens ever, whero, und sympathizing willi all pcop who strive for greater liberty. 5. Any system of the civil scrvii nuder which the subordinate positioi of the Government are considered r wards for mere party zeal, ia fatally d moralizing; and we, therefore, favor reform of the system by laws whi< shall abolish the evils of patronage, ai make honesty, efficiency and fidelity tl essential qualifications for a public poi tion, without practically creating a li tenure of office. 6. We are opposed to further gran of the public lauds to corporations ai , monopolies, and demand that the u tional domain be set apart for free hom for the people. 7. The annual revenue, after - pay i ourrent debt, should famish a moderi balance for the reduction of the prim pal, and tho revenue receipts, so mu as may be derived from tax upon 1 baooo and liquors, be raised by dat: for importation, the duties of whi should be so adjusted as to aid in seci ing remunerative wages io ?abor a promote tba industry, growth aud pr< parity of the whole country. 8. We hold in undying honor tho s titers and sailors whose valor saved t 'Union. Their pensions are a sacr debt of the nation, and the widows a ' orphans of those who died for their cot try are entitled to the care of such ad tional legislation as will extend I bounty of the Government to alt the s diera and sailors who were honorai discharged, and who in the line of di became disabled, without regard to I length of service or the causo of st discharge. 9. The dootrine of Great Dritain o other European powers concerning a gianoe-"Once a Bubjeot always a si jeot"-having at last, through the effc of the Republican party, been abandi ed, and tbs American idea of the in vidual right tc transfer allegiance hav been accepted by European nations, i the duty of our Government to gai with jealous care the right of adop Citizens against assumption of onautb ized claims by their former Governme and we urge continued careful ono ragement aud protection of volunt immigration. 10. The franking privilege ought be abolished, and the way prepared a speedy reduction in the rate of poste 11. Among the questions which pi for attention is that whioh concerns relations of capital and labor, and Republican party reoognize the dat; eo shaping legislation as to secure protection and the amplest field for pital ; and for labor, the creator of ci tal, the largest, opportunities and a, share of the mutual profits of these great servants of civilization. 12. We hold that Congress and President have only fulfilled an imp tive duty in their measures for tho i pression of violent and treasonable o nizations in oertain lately rebellious gione, and for the protection of ballot-box, and, therefore, they are titled to the thanks of the nation. I 13. We denounce repudiation of the pnblio debt, in any form or disguise, as ' a national orime. We witness with pride \ the reduction of the principal of the , debt, of the rates of interest upon the balance, and confidently txpect our ex ! cellent national currency will be per ? footed by a speedy resumption of specie payment. 14. That* the Republican party is I mindful of its obligations to the loyal I women of America for their noble devo? tion to the cause of freedom. Their ad? mission to wide fields of usefulness is viewed with satisfaction, and the honest demand of any class of citizens for addi? tional rights should be treated with re? spectful consideration. 15. We heartily approve the action of Congress in extending amnesty to those lately in rebellion, and rejoioe in the growth of peace and fraternal feeling throughout the land. 16. The Republican party propose to respect the rights reserved by the peo plo to themselves as carefully as the powers delegated by them to the State. 17. It is the duty of the General Go? vernment to adopt snob measures as will tend to encourage American commerco and ship building. 18. We believe that the modest patri? otism, the earnest purpose, the sound judgment, the praotioal wisdom, the in? corruptible integrity, and the illustrious services of Ulysses S. Grant, have com? mended him to the heart of the Ameri? can people; and with him at our head, we start to-day upon a new march to vic? tory. fe J. CAEN.
