THE DAILY 'Let oar just Censares mamu Attend the True Event." BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., THURSDAY MORNING, APRIL 25, 1872. VOL. VIII-NO. 31 HONOR TO A SOUTHERN WRITER IN ENG? LAND.-Recently the Premier, Mr. Glad? stone, referring to the recovery from tho late almost fatal illness of the Prince of Wales, adduced as one proof of Ameri? can sympathy in his behalf tho beautiful poem called "Sandringham," composed by a Southern poetess, par excellence, Mrs. Margaret J. Preston, of Lexington, Ya., which he styled a "poem of extra? ordinary merit." Soon after, the editor | of the London Cosmopolitan, who had republished "Sandringham" from tho columns of the New York Albion, carno out with the following paragraph: "We are sure," he said, "that it will gratify Mrs. Preston, of Virginia, to bo in? formed that her Royal Highness, the Princess of Wales, lias written us n let? ter of thankB for republishing her beau? tiful poem, 'Sandringham,' in the Cos? mopolitan." Such honors to a Southern woman of genius should delight every patriot in our section, and be noticed by our press everywhere. The claimant to tho Tichborne estate, who now languishes in Newgate on a ohargo of perjury, has addressed a letter ! to the London News appealing to tho ' publio for pecuniary assistance to enable bim to meot tho prosecution which is now ponding with a respectable defence. He declares himself penniless, solemnly affirms that he is Sir Roger Tichborne, maintains that ho is shamefully perse? cuted, and expresses great hope that the British people will Bee that justice is done him by securing him a fair trial. A curious effect was produced in the Penasquitos Valley, Gal., by the recent earthquake. The springs were opened to such an extent as to increase tho flow of water moro than four-fold. A reser? voir, which it took three and-a-half to four days to fill, was filled in twenty four hours. The earthquake of fifteen years ago partially closed tho same springs. The wealthy citizens of the "Hub" have a trick of changing their residences before the 1st of May, so as to avoid tax? ation on personal property. It seems that Boston loses in this way every year from $2,000,000 to $3,000,000 of taxes. Tho plan is to move ont of the city into some of the small suburban towns, where taxation is low, and every year the prac? tice is becoming more fashionable. "Here's your in-waders," shouted a member of the eleventh Mississippi regiment, as General Leo's veteran army plunged into the Potomac on its way to Gettysburg. "And here's your wetter nns," echoed a gallant soldier pf tba old fourth Alabama. Four years ago Lincoln, tho oapital of Nebraska, was "away out on Ike prairie," and was called "Young's Colony." Be? fore the close of the present season it will have six railroads, and will be light? ed with gas. A resident of Kalamazoo writes to a "school board" in Ohio, that ho will take a school, as he has "tought 2 terms sohool and I attended 1 college 4 yrs at detroit, michigan, and am 26 yrs av age." The New York Tribune says: "A little more statesmanship and a little less poli? tics might have prevented the tax on in? comes, and a few other such unpopular imposts, frbm being kept on the statute book any longer." That is a fact. One farmer in California, during last season, trapped and skinned 80,000 squirrels, selling tho skins for glove making at fifteen cents eaob. A lady at Roohester, Minn., has ob? tained a patent for a fan, to be attached to a sewing maohine, and operated by the same power as the machine. A little girl of Cedar Rapids, Michi? gan, recently suffered from enr-aahe, and a sprouting sun-flower seed was afterwards extracted from her ear. It is said that a 3,000 ton iron steam? ship can be bought in England for $200, OOO less than it oan be built for here. Circassian girls are plenty and cheap in tho market of Constantinople this year. A Texan game of euohre was ended by one of the players ordering the other up with his little Derringer. Some people are positive just in pro? portion to their ignorance. Mark that. Why are pigs like fashionable women? Because they eaoh carry a carl behind, j IRWIN'S HALL.
