? 'ni,. ? THE DAILY 'Let our inst Censures Attend the Trae Event.' BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., TUESDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 20, 1872. VOL. VII-NO. 285. A Savannah papar telle tbis: "From the mere misplacing of a comma, in oar local columna yesterday, a woman waa changed into a dog. Oar reporter, in describing the painting on a banner, wrote 'beside this maiden ia an Irish {;ray hound,' bat a comma having found ta way after the first word, it read 'be? side, this maiden is an Irish grayhound, ' thus showing the importance of the rale, "mind yoar stops." A joking Harvard student recently called for a doctor io great haste, direct? ing tho servant where he should go. The doctor went, bat found bis services unnecessary and his call a hoax. So far all was very well, but the servant recog? nized the caller, and the next day the doctor called on bim and asked him whether be would rather pay twenty dol? lars or be arrested. Ho said be thought so too, and paid the twenty dollars. An intoxicated man saw two oars pass? ing him the other evening, with red and blue lights in the front and rear. His fuddled brain oomprehended odored lights, and he was beard to say to him? self: "Mast be pretty sick-sickly here; they're running drag stores roand on Wheels." That wonderful toad, which bas such a penchant for resting cosily for a thousand ?ears or so in the middle of a solid onldor, has been disturbed again down in North Carolina. He was found in the oeutre of a large rook, as usual, and we are glad to hear that he is still in a vigor? ous condition. At Mull, a messenger having request? ed a London olergyman to announce that "if Dr. Leach was among the audi? ence he was urgently wanted," the cler? gyman added, from sympathy, "and may God have mercy upon the poor patient." A precocious boy in a pablio school out West, who stands high in geography, waB recently asked by his teacher where Africa was located. He promptly an? swered, "All over the United States." A Boston man hos preserved all the parodies upon the poem of "The Hea? then Chinee" that be found in the papers, and bas forty-thrc - f the Ah Sinine productions. ...Dayton, Ohio, is again mystical about its "sleeping beauty," who, as fat and as dead looking as ever, bas now com? menced her annual somnolent humbug gery. Mr. Vernon Harcourt says the House of Commons is like ap army or a pack of hounds; its behavior depends very much on those who have the conduot of it. Mexico contemplates a "world's fair," bat tbat country will have to keep better order at home before exhibitors from abroad will trust their goods there. Its a way with tailors to recommend things which are much worn when yon want to buy new. E isy shaving soap-Beady money. IT COST!
