COLUMBIA, August 18,1871. An Illinois Wedding-Lively Scenes. Cole, tho artist, has jost rel urned from a trip down the Peoria, Pekiu and Jack? sonville Railroad, and while stopping at Forest City he witnessed a rural wed? ding, which quite throws into the shade anything of the kind we have ever heard. While at the hotel, in the evening, a party drove up, and, assembling in the parlor, sent for the landlord. They had como from the prairie, and were in search of an official to tie the knot that should make them one and inseparable forevermore. Cole was invited to wit? ness the ceremony, and ascending to tho parlor found tho expeoted bridegroom, a man about forty years of age, and a fair and blushing damned of twenty, waiting impatiently tho arrival of the parson. For some reason, no minister could bo found, and they were obliged to fall back npon a .young fellow newly-elected a justice of the peace, and who had never before officiated at a ceremony of thiB kind. He was very nervous at the idea of having to perform the ceremouy, and had brought with him a copy of "Every Man His Own Lawyer," and "Haines* Township Lawa," through which he searched for a desired form. Not fiudiug one, aud tho crowd growing impatient, ho told tho couple to ??and np before him and hold up their right hands. This done, ho pronounced the fo lowing unique charge: ..Yon and each of you do solemnly Hvear that in the cause now upon bear? ing you will tell the truth, the whole t'uth, and nothing but tho truth, and t lat you will love, honor, cherish and obey each other during tho term of your natural lives: So help you God." Both answered solemnly, "I will," and then the justice charged them a dol? lar each, and pronounced them mau and wife. One of tho friends thon produced a jug of whiskey from their wagon and proceeded to compound a punch, of which tho whole crowd drank freely and had a dance. As they could find no music, their efforts wore principally con? fined to jigs and break-downs. At last, the party concluded to pat the happy couple to bed. The bride was willing to So, because sho said she was tired and er shoos pinched her lent. The girU of the party took ber off to ber chamber and disrobed her, and announced to the young man that everything was ready. AU repaired to the bridal-ohamber, wbero tho face of tho new-made bride was sweetly reposing on the pillow. After a romp and tho perpetration of the cus? tomary jokes, the young fellows inti? mated to the bridegroom that they pro? posed to divest him of his wearing ap? parel, and pat him by the side of his wife. Ho demurred, and thon a scuffle ensued. The bridegroom was BB strong as an oz, and getting angry he blackened one fellow's eye, and tore another one's eoat off his back. In the turmoil, the whole party got oat of the room, tum? bled down stairs, dud brought up in the bar-room, where, good order being re? stored, everybody took a drink. In spite of all persuasions, the newly-murried man declared he wasn't going to let them tnko off his clothes. His comrades then got a ropo, and making a noose slipped it over his head and tried to drag him np stairs. Thoy nearly choked bira to death, when the landlord interfered and oat the cord. Then they fastened it to his leg, and in trying to drag him up stairs broko a lounge, tore down a hand rail and ball the banisters. Finding that they couldn't get him up stairs, they went up to see if they couldn't make the bride get up and come down, bnt sbo looked the door and wouldn't let the orowd in. Some of them got a barn mer and nails, and getting a ladder, put it up on tbe outside of the house, climbed into the bride's apartment, and nailed up the door solidly, vowing if the bridegroom wouldn't let them put bim to bed, he shouldn't got into the room anyhow. They hid tho ladder and went off. The happy man Hading the coast clear, walked quietly to his room nnd attempted to enter. * He couldn't get in, and he frantically shouted: "Jenny, open tho door!" Jenny informed him that it wae uailed up. Ho tried to kick it open, when tbe landlord interfered and told him he was not going to have tho furniture of the bouse ruined in that way. Ho went out nnd tried to find the ladder, but couldn't find it. At lust, some one remembered that n company of lightning-rod men had some ladders at tho other end of the town. So down the newly-married soul hastened, se? cured a ludder, and nt 4.30 in tho morn? ing succeeded in joining his bride in the room above. The nest morning, tho party returned home, declaring that they had bad the jolliest wedding ever known in that auction. This is no fancy sketch, but a bona fide occurrence.
