It suggests to the'Survi? vors' Association an enterprise than which none more ueoful and noble eonld command ite energies. Tbe lYew? Bays: "The United States Government pays out $21,000,000 as pensions to tho wi? dows and orphans of tho soldiers killed or dying on tho Federal side during the late oivil wur. Those who di*.a on tho Confederate side lost their live? after serving without pay for two years, and their families, by tho edict of emancipa? tion- the moat sweeping measure of con? fiscation' npon the records of history have been roduoed to povorty. What a contrast! And who will justify tho wnys of Providence when it is so indubitably certain that the soldiers of tho South fought for their faith, and the mercena? ries ol the North for their money. The Survivors' Association has boen project? ed to preserve the truth of history as to the character of tho Southern troops, but has not as yet reached that number of members it onght to have reached, nor exhibited that enthusiasm which the cause demands. It has struck us that if n religious and charitable feature be en? grafted upon it, some practicable scheme of benevolence that will reach the bo- 1 socas of men and enlist their sympathy, tho Association wonld immediately be- \ gin to grow rapidly, and soon .would : number over 10,000 active members, contributing their dollar annually, and reading with interest the details of all , its proceedings. i "To attempt to pension tho widows : and orphans of the Confederate dead, ' without the aid of taxation and tho in? strumentality of tho Government, would be absurd, What, then, eau be done? We believe that a successful effort could be made to educate some of the children ; locally, where they are, in the different ? To make this effort seems to us demanded by gratitude and by j OH tico, and we are re? joiced to know that it is in contemplation by several of our generals to call the at? tention of the Survivors' Association to thia subject at the November meeting in Columbia. WHABTON INDICTED BY THE GRAND JUBY.-From the Baltimore Sun we take the following particulars relative to this interesting case: The grand jury of the criminal court, on Saturday, indicted Mrs. E. G. Whar? ton for the murder of General William Scott Ketchum, and also with attempt? ing to poison Eugene Vau Ness. The indictment for the murder of General Ketchum contains four counts. The first charges the administration of tartar emetio and tincture of yellow jasmine on the 28th of Jane, 1871, and tho second by administering poison, the name of which is unknown, in the same manner, : on the Bame day. The third and fourth ' counts obargo murder by three adminis? trations of tartar emetic and poison of ; an unknown nnmo, in lemonade, on the 2 Uh of June, in tea, on the 2Gth of June, nnd tincture of yellow jasmine on the , 28th of June, 1871. , The indictment for attempting to poi? son Eugene Van Ness contains twelve counts, and charges the actual adminis- , tration of tartar emetic and deadly poi? son of unknown name on the 19th, 20th and 24th of June, and with -mingling Buch poison with beef tea on the 24th of 1 Juno, and with milk punch, of which he ; was about to partake, on the 28th of June, 1871, with intent to poison him. The indictment is founded on the code, article 30, section 158, which is in these words: "Every person, his or her aiders or abettors, who shall be convicted of the crime of attempting to poison any person, rd mil be sentenced to undergo a confinement in tho penitentiary for not less than two nor moro than ten year j." THE WAY THEY MANUFACTURE KU KLUX TESTIMONY.-Tho annexed card, published in the Shelby (N. C.) Barnier, over tho signnture of Plato Durham, de? mands a suspension of judgment on tho statements made touching his evidence before the Eu Klux Committee, as pub? lished in the Washington Chronicle:' A CARD.-Mr. Editor: I see in the Rutherford Star and other papers an article copied from the Washington Chronicle, (Radical organ,) which pur? ports to give a synopsis of my testimony before the Congressional Committee in? vestigating tho condition of the South. I have never heretofore condescended to notice lying newspaper urticles, but as this statement may do harm in the coun? try, I ask permission to state in your columns that it is a lying, garbled, por verted nnd misrepresented statement of my testimony, from beginning to end, gotten up to Borve the purposes of Radi? calism. There are not five lines of real truth in the whole statement. PLATO DURHAM. The Rome (Ga.) Courier says: "Mr. Jim Harris, the brother of Mr. E. R. Harris, oar fellow-citizen, was shot on Snit?ay afternoon, at Oxford, Ala., and killed instantly. He was shot in the forohead. The shooting was tho result bf. a personal difficulty, we believe, though we heard no particulars."
