These orders, known as "squirrel scrip," are not always promptly paid, in conse? quence of the exhaustion of the appro? priations, and, therefore, are sold at rates varying from fifty to seventy-five cents 'on the dollar. The squirrel skins are sold to the agents of foreign glove ?manufacturers, and, it is said, are pre? ferred to the best rot or kid skins, being equally soft, fine and.elastio, and at the same time tougher and more durable. The bounty is ten cents a head and the skins bring fifteen cents apiece, so that the bunters receive twenty-five cents each for the squirrel skins. The busi? ness of shooting squirrels in California is therefore pursued . by many aotive hunters, and one young man in Contra.
