These orders, known as "squirrel scrip," are not always promptly paid, in conse? quence of the exhaustion of the appro? priations, and, therefore, are sold at rates varying from fifty to seventy-five cents 'on the dollar. The squirrel skins are sold to the agents of foreign glove ?manufacturers, and, it is said, are pre? ferred to the best rot or kid skins, being equally soft, fine and.elastio, and at the same time tougher and more durable. The bounty is ten cents a head and the skins bring fifteen cents apiece, so that the bunters receive twenty-five cents each for the squirrel skins. The busi? ness of shooting squirrels in California is therefore pursued . by many aotive hunters, and one young man in Contra. Costa County, it is reported, killed 10,000 squirrels in a single season. THE PI^QDB or NEW "YORK CITY. There are 20,000 tenement houses in New York oity, and in these, it is said, fully 500,000 of people are crowded. The greater portion of them , are huge barracks, littered all over with dirt and festering hu muni ty.
