Her extreme length was about thirty feet, with fivo or six feet beam, and about "five or six feet depth of hold. In general contour sho resembled a cigar, sharp nt both euds. Sho was propelled by a screw, tho shaft of which ran hori? zontally along her hold, almost from storn to stem, and was turned by the manual force of eight men, seated along it on either side. Tho only hatchway was cir? cular, about, two feet in diameter, with a low combing ttrouud it, which was placed well forward, and when desired, could be closed by au iron cap working on hinges und made air-tight. In tho for? ward part of this cap was inserted a clear glass bull's eye, through which tho pilot could seo. She was provided with water-tight compartments, by filling or emptying which sho would 6ink or rise, and to enable her to riso instantly, her ballasting of railroad bars was placed on her bottom, outside of her hull, and by means of keys accessible to her crew, could be detached iu a moment, so that she would rise quickly to tho surface. Besides her rudder, which was of thc usual form, this vessel was equipped with side paddles or fins, which, like those of a fish, served to guido it up 01 down with reference to tho surface ol the water. To prepnre for action a floating torpo do was scoured to her stern by a linc more than 100 feet long, and her crev having embarked, tho water tanks wen filled until tho boat was in equilibrio and almost submerged. The hatchway was closed, the men revolved the shaft the captain or pilot, standing under th batch, steered the boat, regulating at th game time, by the action of her Intern fins, the depth at which she would move Her greatest speed did not exceed fou knots. She could remain submerged fo half an hour or an hour, without an great inconvenience to her crew-an on one occasion has been known to rc main under water two hours, without a< tu al injury to them, although no mear were provided for procuring fresh ail and from tho moment the hatch wt closed/ tho men, thus fastened in the living tomb, inhaled and exhaled coi tinuously the atmosphere which was ei closed with them. Its front was terminated by sharp and barbed lauco-head, so tl when tho boat was driven end on agaii a ship's sides, tho lance-head would forced deep into tho timbers, below t water line, and would fasten the i pedo firmly nguinst tho ship. Then t torpedo boat would back off and explc it by a lanyard. Gen. Beauregard's call upon tho C< federate fleet for veluuteers to mau t dangerous craft was promptly aoswei by Lieut. Payne, a Virginian, and eij sailors. They were soon ready action; and on tho evening set for tb expedition, the last preparation 1 been made. Brave Dixon guided tho torpedo fairly against her, tho explosion toro up tho great war- ship's sidos, so that shu went down with nearly all her crew within two minutos. Tho torpedo vessel also disappeared forever from mortal view. Whether sho went down with her enemy, or whether she drifted out to sea to bury her gallant dead, was never known, and their fate wns left till tho gi*eat day when the sea shall give np its dead. But within a low weeks past, divers in submarino armor havo visited tho wreck of tho Housatonic, and they havo found tho little torpedo vessel lyiog by her hugo victim, and within ber are the bones of tho most devoted aud during men who ever went to war.
