"Let our Just Censure '^^^^^^SSsW^i^^WBt' Attend the True Event." BY J. A. SELBY COLUMBIA, S. C.. TUESDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 13, 1870. YOL. VI-NO /$/ . ' ? . t? ' ?rt JL? Prussian superiority of. numbers of which, I think, there eau be no doubt; but while this point is olear, another point is equally so-why this superiority lu numbera? This brings us to the se? cond reason. 2. Surprised, which means outwitted or outgeneraled. 8.?Their spy system is incalculably superior. The country is infested with their spies. 4. Their troops Are with moro steadi? ness and precision. Tho Germans tako aim, tho French bang away without de? liberation or care. So whichever may be tho best arm, thechansepot or needle gun, those who handle the latter aro superior in skill to those who use the former. 5. They have the most accomplished strategist in tho world, (Moltke,) and wo havo no one to compare with him. And it is yet to be demonstrated whether wc havo a field general equal to tho Grown Prince. 6. Their tactics aro Napoleonic-over? whelming the weak places and destroying tho enemy by piece-meal. Ours is that of waiting for pitched battles with equal numbers, and trusting to dash fighting and field combinations. 7. They know us, and we have been too vain to condesoend to find out any? thing about them. Our self-confidence loftily refused to investigate their condi? tion, politically or military; they have been conversant with our situation for four years. Bismarck has bamboozled our diplomatists, and Moltke knows more about our geography and topogra? phy than we know ourselves. 8. They were ready, as we now find out to our surprise and grief, and we are uot ready, as we discover to our amazement j and consternation. 9. And we are equally astonished to seo South Germany taking aides with Prussia, and so giving them tho prepon? derance of numbers in effective troops. These are tho explanations of their reverses, which the French have dropped and I have picked np. ^ ? ? PAMS MOURNING FASHIONS.-Most of the ladies of Paris at this sad season wear blaok. Those who havo not lost rela? tives in the war, but simply wear black os a mark of respect for their friends who have been less fortunate, do not adopt the deepest mourning, but, as a rule, put on black China crepe dresses, and this material is invariably worn over a black silk petticoat, trimmed with three deep flounces. HEAVY MORTOAGE.-Yesterday morn? ing, a mortgage executed July 1, 18(38, by the South Carolina Railroad to the State of South Carolina, protecting tho bonds of said corporation guaranteed by the State, was recorded in the office of the Clerk of tho Superior Court, the revenue stamps upon which amounted to $3,001.-Augusta Constiltdionalist. DEAR Sins: During a residence of somo ton years as a missionary in Siam and Ciiina, I ronnel your Yogetablo Tain Killer a most valu? able remedy for that Tearful scourge, Cholera. In administering thc medicine, I found it most effectual to givo a teaspoonful of Pain Killer in a gill of hot wate r, sweetened with sugar; then, after about fifteen minutes, begin to givo about a teaspoonful of tho saino mix? ture every few minutes until relief was ob? tained. Apply hot applications to the extremi? ties. Patho the stomach with the Pain Killer, clear, and rub the limbs briskly. Of those who had the Cholera, and took tho medicine faithfully in the wav stated above, eight out of ten recovered. Truly yours, It. TELFORD. If attacked with tho Diarrhoea, Dysentery, Cramp, Celie, don't delay uso of PAIN KILLEN. FUNOCHOW, CHINA. Dr.AK Sins: During a long residence in Chi? na, I havo used your invaluable Pain Killer, both in my own family and among tho Chi? nese, and tiavo found it a most excellent me? dicine. In tho summer of 1802 and 'G3, whilo residing in Shanghai, I found it au almost cortain euro for Cholora, if used in timo. In? deed, using it in a great many instances, I do not remember failing in a singlo caso. For throo years, I have been residing in thiB placo, more than fifty miles from a physician, and have been obliged often to fall upon my own resources in caso of siukucBs. Tho Chinese come to us in groat numbera for medicino and advice. Though wittiout medical knowledgo ourselves, tho few simple remedies wo can command aro so much in advance oven of [ their physicians, that wo havo almost daily applications. We allow them to como, because it brings us in contact with them, and opens a door of usofnlnoss.
