Raciug ulong ut a speed not less than a mile in four or five minutes, the fire boro dowu on the little place. Women, with their little ones clinging to them, screamed iu wild affright; hardy mon who, perhaps, never before knew what terror meaut, stood aghast with blanched checks and trembling limbs. Suddenly, tho cry arose, "To the river!" Immediately, the inhabitants were hurrying along, seeking only to preserve their liveB, and in a few minutes, they found themselves huddled together, near tho river's side, with al! their worldly possessions snatch? ed from them, some of them with scarce? ly any clothing on, so brief had beou tho time allowed them to prepare for their flight. Just above their heads, the flames roared iu wild, tumultuous riot, casting a lurid reflection upon the river as it rippled along, and illuminating tho valley with a bright, glowing light. Upon rafts, hastily put together, tho poor, houseless wanderers embarked, and with tho ruins of their late homes blazing above them, they set forth upon their venturesome way. Arter a voyage at? tended with many perils and hair-breadth escapes, they at length made Gatineau Point, where they remained for the night, and have since obtained shelter. A SINGULAR FATALITY.-The Troy Times says: A singular fatality seems to attend the men who make it a busi? ness to pick personal quarrels and get np collisions with John Morrisey. Every one of them has died of the bullet at tho hands of other parties. Bill Poole was the first person with whom Mr. M. had a brawl. Subsequently he was shot, and died from the effects of the wound. Next Pandeen picked a quarrel with Morrissey, and he, too, fell by another's hand. Bill Mulligan next attacked the ex-pugilist, and in a little while he was shot and killed. This summer John Casey tried his hand at it, and on Sun? day night be met his death, RS all his predecessors had done, by the bullet. We mention this as a singular coinci? dence, and as one not nt all reflecting upon Mr. Morrissey, who had no hand in the death of any of the parties, and who was always too generous to wish even a mortal foe the slightest harm. Thieves and loafers ought to learn from this record that the safest thing is to let him alone severely. A young lady in Rensselaer County, New York, paid a man $20,000 to marry her. The cash was in greenbacks. That girl must have been exceedingly green. Why did she not advertise for sealed proposals, and award the contract to the lowest bidder?
