They weigh from twenty-five to forty pounds each, nnd one man can readily carry one. They are said to be very de? structive with canister, at a range of 300 or 400 yards. A manufactory turns out from four to five a day. BRAZIL.-According to the official com? mercial reports of the British Consuls in Brazil, the number of slaves in that country may be estimated at 2,000,000, valued from $15 to $1,500 eaoh. This difference arises from the varying health, age'and qualifications of the slaves. It is also asserted that the slaves are fast dying out, at the rate of 8,000 deaths in excess of the births per annum. A Pennsylvania paper tells of a local preacher who has received for salary this year nothing but a ourry-comb, a keg of varnish and two dozen clothes-pins. "Whenever his children cry -with hunger, he gags them with a clothes-pin, Boratches their stomaohs with the onrry-comb and lays on a coat of varnish. Greeley recently wrote: "The duty of the hour demands patience and sympa? thy," and found it converted into "The dirty* power dislikes poverty and soft Boop." He did not swear-he only groaned. At Indianola, Texas, where water is one dollar n backet, a large portion of the population is said to bo delighted because whiskey being the same price, it does not pay to adulterate. A few mornings since, two gentlemen were accosted in the following magnilo? quent strain by a beggar: "Gentlemen, will you administer the balm of consola? tion to a debilitated constitution?"
