r . - THE DAILY 'Let our Just Censuro BY J. A. SELBY COLUMBIA. S. C.. SUNDAY MORNING, JUNE 19. 1870 PHONTX. Attend the True Event." VOL. VI-NO. 79. Wrxjj THE CH?NESE ROOT ODT AIIII OTHER LABOE?-From an interesting lec? ture recently delivered in the Mechanics' Institute, San Francisco, by a prominent citizen of that city, on the Chinese ques? tion, it appears that during the past twenty years at least 100,000 Chinese emigrants have landed upon that coast. There are, to-day, 72,000 of them in California, 52,000 of whom are males, who would be voters if they had the right of suffrage. A few years ago tho Germans made all tho cigars iu San Fran? cisco; to-day there is not a German who rolla u cigarette. Chinamen make thom all. Matohos, slippers-all made by Chinamen. lu tho wooleu factories the Chinamau is iu nlmost entire control. Only a few days ago, eight mou were dis? charged from one of these factories. One of tho operatives, with a wife and children wholly dopondent on tho two dollars a day which he got as wages, of? fered to take one dollar and fifty couts. This offer was refused by tho employer, on tho ground that he had hired China? men at eighty cent3 a day. Rope-mak? ing is also in the hands of the Chinese, as wore also cigar-box making nnd the manufacture ot tubs and pails, and door sashes and frames thoy wero beginning to make, and it looks as if they would be ' able to turn them out as well and cheaper than white carpenters. Tailoring, the largest trade in that country, is filled up with Chinese workmen, and the belief of the speaker was, that in two years no white mau would sit cross-legged upon his bench. At boot and shoo making there were now 250 Chinamen at work in San Francisco. They are the domestic servants, they manufacture the fire? works, and it will not be long before tho sewing machine is in their hands. Tho last steamer from China lauded in San Francisco 1,300 Mongolians. There will soon be two steamers a month, which would probably bring 2,600 of these dis? ciples of Coufucius per month, and 20, 000 a year, even while being opposed by adverse legislatiou and public sentiment; but if this barrior is broken dowu, it is believed there will be 80,000 next year and 60,000 tho yenr after that, uutil they feel strong enough to defy Christian civilization and bring over their hordes and overrun this laud like Timour aud his hosts. "All true happiness and nobleness aro near us, and yet neglected by us; aud till we have learned how to bo happy aud noble we have not much to tell, even to red Indians. The delights of horse racing and huntiug, of assemblies in the night instead of tho day, of costly aud wearisome music, of costly aud burden? some dress, of chagrined contention for place or power, or wealth, or the eyes of the multitude; and all thc eudless occu? pation without purpose, nud idleness without rest, of our vulgar world, aro not, it seems to me, enjoyments wo would be ambitious to communicate. And all real and wholesomo enjoyments possible to mau have been just as possi? ble to him, sinco first he was inndo of the earth, as they are now; and they ave possible to him chiefly in peace. To watch the corn grow, and the blossoms set; to draw hard breath over plough? share or spade; toread, tothink, to love, to hope, to pray-these aro the things that make rneu happy; they have always had the power of doing these, they never ?r?7? have power to do more. Thc world's prosperity or adversity depends upon our knowing and teaching these few things; but upon iron, or glass, or electricity, or steam, iu no wiso. Aud I am Utopian aud enthusiastic euotigh to believo that the time will come wheu the world will discover this. It has now made its ex? periments iu every possible direction but the right oue; and it seems that it must, at last, try the right ono, iu a mathe? matical necessitv." A rumor prevailed in Madrid that tho Spanish Government has received the formal abdication of Queen Isabella, aud that assurances have been given that all the jewels bought with her private funds shall be restored to ber possession. That is in? stinct. Human beings, or. tho other band, must depend on reason and experience in se? lecting the means of protecting health and lifo against unwholesome influences. Now. what does reason say ou thia vital subject? Does it not tell us that to invigorate and pu? rify tho svstem ia tho best way to protect it against thc invisible poison which gonerates disease? Surely it does. The next question is, what guido shall we follow in choosing a me? dicinal safeguard? Reason replies, let your monitor bc experience. Well, tho experience ? of eighteen years comprised in ono unbroken series of satisfactory testimoni?is assures us that Hostcttcr'e Stomach Ritters possess strengthening, regulating and antiseptic pro? perties which are uot combined in the came nappy proportions in any other prcparatiou extant. This, therefore is tho antidote to which reason bids us resort when our health is imperilled either by tho malaria which pro? duces epidemic disorders, or by any other cause, whether inherent and constitutional or connected with our habits, occupations and pursuits. The venom of a noxious reptile is scarcely moro suhle and dangerous than that which ?urlis in foul air and impure water. To escapo tho levers, bilious disorders, disturb? ances ot the bowels, and other serious mala? dies productal by those insalubrious clements, it in absolutely necessary that the stomach and all the secretive orgaus should be, so to speak, in a robust condition. Upon thc amount of resistance which tho vital system can oppose to the deleterious influences that assail it, the safety of tho health depends, and it is be? cause tho GREAT VEGETARLE INVIUORANT im? parts energy and regularity to the most im? portant functions of tho body, that it can bc recommended and guaranteed aa an invalua? ble preventivo medicine. .lune 17 ffi WILL all those afllicted with COUGH on CONSUMPTION, read the following and learn thc value of ALLEN'S LUNG BALSAM? TUE extensive uso of these WATCHES for thc last fifteen years by Railway Conductors, Engineers and Expressmen, tho most exacting of watch-wearers, has thoroughly demonstrat? ed tho strength, steadiness, durability and accuracy of tho Waltham Watch. To satisfy that class in all theso respects, is to decide tho question as to tho real value of these timc koeperH. More than 150,000 of these watches are now speaking for themselves in tho pockets of the people-a proof and a guarantee of their superiority over all others. Tho superior organization and great extent of tho Company's Works at Waltham, enable them to produce watches at a price which renders competiolion futile, and those who buy any other watch, merely pay from 25 to 50 per cent, more for their watches than ia necessary. Weare now selling Waltham Watches at less prices in greenbacks, than the gold prices before thc war. There is no other manufac? ture of any kind in thc United .States of which this can bc said. Ihcso time-pieces combine every improve? ment that a long experience has proved of real practical usc. Having had tho refusal of nearly every invention in watch-making origi? nating in this country or in Europe, only those were finally adopted which severe tosting, by thc most skillful artisans in our works, and long use on the part of the public, demonstrat? ed to bo essential to correct and enduring time-keeping. 43-Among the many improve? ments we would particularize: Thc invention and usc of a centre-pinion of peculiar construction, to prevent damage to thc train by thc breakage: of main-springs, ia original with tho American Watch Company, who, having had tho refusal of all other con? trivances, adopted Fogg's patent pinion aa bc ing thc best and faultless. Hardened and tempered hair springs, now universally admitted hy watch-makers to be tho best, are used in all grades of Waltham Watches. All Waltham Watches have dust-proof capa, protecting tho movement from dust and les? sening the necessity of thc frequent cleaning necessary in other watches. Our new patent stem-winder, or keyless watch, ia already a decide il success, and a great improvement on any stem-winding watch in the American market, and by far tho cheap? est watch of its quality now offered to the public. To those living in portions of the United States where watch-makers do not abound, watches with the above mentioned improvements which tend to insure accuracy, cleanliness, durability and convenience, must prove invaluable.
