?ac ac a? o sa X?-?L3xnr, The Empty Cradle. ID the lonely, quiet chamber There's an empty eradlo bed, With a print apon the pillow Of a baby's shining head. 'Tis a fair and dainty cradle; Downy soft the pillows white; Bnt within the blankets folded, Lies no little form to-night. . Onco the mothor sat beside, ii When the day was growing dim, And her pleasant voice was singing Soft and low a ?radle hymn, Now there's no more need of einging When the evening shadows creep. For the crAdlo bed is empty . And tho baby gono to sloop. Little head, that usod to nestle In tho pillows white and soft; Little hands whose restless fingers Folded there in dreams so soft; Lips we pressed with kindest kisses Eyes we praised for purest ray Underneath the church-yard daisies They have hid yon all away. Ahl the empty, useless cradle! Wo will put it out of sight, Lest onr hearts should grieve to? sorely For tho little one to-night. We wili think how safe forever In tho better fold above, That young lamb for which we sorrow Restetli now in Jesus' love. My First NlgHt "On Guard."' A correspondent of tho Banner of the South, writes : Daring the first raid of Banks through Louisiana, June, 18GB, I made my debut in military life, joining W-'s battery of Louisiana Artillery, C. 8. A., as "high private"-a young, raw and unsophisti? cated yonth. The battery was oncamped on the banks of Bayon Teche, in n beauti? ful country, ornamented in tho highest degree by the wealthy and aristocratic planters of that fertile seotiou; tho stream bordered with those grand old live and water oaks, well known as the most magnificent trees in the country. After being three days in the company, I was detailed for guard duty; and at night stationed' to watch some choice Southern fruits and vegetables, brought into camp for the sick late in tho even? ing, and laid out on tho grass under a large live oak, whoso branches, spread? ing far out, reached nearly to tho ground. A guard was required to keep oil' quad? rupeds, as well as some bipeds pertain? ing to tho porcine species, whose craving for suoh delicacies might render the temptation irresistible. Though tho night was star-light, my post was dark and gloomy, owing to the heavy shade of the trees, and I could with difficulty distinguish objects within a few feet. I had no weapon. I walked my lonely beat, fifty yards from any hu? man being, around the dainty goods con? fided to my caro. All naturo was hushed in donth-like repose; even our horses being wrapped iu their slumbers, usually taken nt this hour, about 3 in the morning. Only one who has been in a similar situation, can realize my feelings ou this my first night of guard duty; having just left a sweet and comfortable homo, and unaccustomed to military life. My thoughts naturally wandered back to scenes and dear ones at home. My good and kind father, my fond and in? dulgent mother, my sweet, amiable and loving sisters, ever ready to favor their wayward and inconsistent brother; all now seemed dearer than ever to my lone? ly heart. * * * Another sweet faco also arises before my eyes, wandering in spirit afar off to my distant Missouri home. I am growing happy in my reveries-by no means asleep, but steadi? ly pacing my beat. Yet, groat Heavens! what infernal yell was that overheard? a most diabolical, unearthly scream 1 Is it the enemy from the lower regions screeching for his prey? My hat, up? lifted by my bristling hair, falls from my head; my knees knock together; my teeth chatter; a cold perspiration; my blood chilled; my stick clutched with tho grasp of desperation. All this was the shock of a moment-liko n uight-mnro. Thon comes a repetition of hoot-toot-te too-oooo-oo! from the commander-in chief of the screech-owls-after his warn? ing blast-now sounding tho "assembly" for his scattered guerillas, and anon, the whole forest re-echoes with the cries of his dusky warriors of the night, going forth on their predatory excursions. * * * * * * Laugh, if you will, my young sir, nevertheless, though I pride myself somewhat ou my courage, and have "faced the music" "over and oft," I frankly confess that "then aud there" I experienced a single moment of terror such as I never had before, and hope never again to feel! Did you ever hear a screech-owl in tho dead of night? Then, try and have a companion with you the first time, or you may never get back your breath again. * * * Suppose a negro man owned a farm, and employed laborers who, when elec? tion day came, went to tho polls and voted to disfranchise and degrade their employer, what would lie do? A vory intelligent colored man auswercd tho question a day or so since. Ho said: "I would drive every one of them oft" my place, and they never should have a cont of my money as long as they lived." Tho reply was quito natural. Who says it was unjust? A few days ago, in Elizabeth, Harrison County, Indiana, seven young ladies, all members of families in good standing, were arrested for disorderly conduct dur? ing a religious mooting. A fearful and unknown malady is now raging among the inhabitants of tho in? terior of the State of Vera Cruz. People are dying by hundreds, and tho towns and villages aro deserted. John C. Heenan, a wealthy and well known Irishman, died at San Francisco a short time since, and John C. Heenan, the ex-pugilist, has received sovoral full length obituary notices in consequence. A New York boarding school kcepor says that for cash ho has boen offered West Point nominations by authorized agents of Congressmen.
