Whitby, Chief Deteotivc in the service of Ahe United States Trea? sury, .assisted by John Clarvoe, his prin? cipal ailacJi?, han made arrests in Mary? land, Pennsylvania; New York and seve? ral Western States, of ouunterfeiters and counterfeit money* plates, presses, dies and other materials.. About one dozen men altogether have been arrested in the mst six weeks! The Indiana gang were arrested some days ago near Fort Wayne, while engaged in making money; 400,000 counterfeit notes of twenty-five cent currency were seized, with twelve sets of steel plu tes, fifty sets of dies, several presses and a lot of ink and other | material. A number of important ar? rests and seizures lately made will be! given to the public in a few days, which j will show the complicity of export coun? terfeiters equal to anything ever before ] heard of in this or any other country. The twenty-five cent counterfeit note, jost captured, is a finished imitation, and n large amount of it has been circu? lated by the gang. The late arrest of a Government officer in Western New York, who was found to be iu complicity with Sims, promises developments of great importance to the secret service. It is said that Sims' friends expended $20,000 to obtain bis pardon several years ago. # The Beefsteak Club of London is dead. For 134 years did its jovial mem? bers meet and eat together. Nothing is j immortal, however, and on the 7th of j April of this year the most successful oonvivial society of England becamo a thing of the past. During its long ex- j istence, as a matter of course, its rolls had borne the signatures of many cele? brated men, and its cellars contained a proportionate number of famous brands | of liquors. After the demise of the club, all of tho remaining goods and chattels, consisting chiefly of old relics and the remnants of its Btock of wines, were dis? persed far and wide by the fatal hammer of the auctioneer.
