HBBOIO CONDUCT OP A COI^ORED MAN.- W. I*. Oliveira visited tho plantation of General George P. Harrison, OB the Savannah River, about ten miles from the city, for the purposo of serving writs in civil cases, and returned to the city on Sunday last. He reports that on Saturday morning last four colored men anu two colored women embark? ed in a small boat for the purpose of passing from Argyle Island to the . plantation of General Harrison, and 'when some distance from the shore the boat upset and precipitated the whole party into the river. A colored man, named Stewart Small, heard the screams of the party, and without hesitating a moment, he ; rushed to the river, plunged in and ?swam out to the struggling persons. He oanght a negro man named John Walker, swam with him to the boat, and made him catch bold of it; he then returned and caught Grace 'Walker, after she had sunk twice, anti brought her to the boat. The pother four negroes were drowned. - Slcwnrt caused the two whom he had aavttd to grasp the boat firmly; and he then took hold of it with one hand, used the other in swimming, -and managed, after a desperate ^struggle, to reach the shore, towing in the boat and the two human be? ings, whose lives he had saved. ^Qoneral Harrison, on bearing of the -affair, proceeded at once to the spot, and had drags arranged, and in a ?hort time three of the bodies were taken out of the river. Tho nnmes '.ot the four who wore drowued were: jC. Bntler, Charles Boyer, Kate Sager taud Alfred Groover. They all be? longed on General Harrison's place, and had been over to Argyle Island ,for 801U0 purpose of their own. Stewart Small, who by bis heroio conduct saved the lives of two fellow beings, is represented to be nn intel? ligent, honest and industrious colored man, and bis gallant behavior in this instance is worthy of tho highest praise.-Savannah News. GRIME IN PHILADELPHIA.-The Philadelphia criminnls have one pe? culiar and shocking crime iu which no other city indulges to any thing like the same extent. When we hear of a defenceless old lady being mur? dered in a cowardly and atrocious manner, we at once know it was done in Philadelphia. Within the last keif dosen years there have been at least six oases of this character, al? most precisely similar in all their details. There have, in fact, been so many cases, that we should think that all old and infirm ladies would begin to dread a residence in that charming Quaker City, known as tho "City of Brotherly Love." [Cincinnati Enquirer. Tho greater portion of Switzerland is completely buried iu snow. It fell incessantly for two days and two nights, and tho railways were only rendered passable after great exer? tions. It is a curious faot that appears from the report of the Secretary of the Interior, that while there is but one Revolutionary soldier now living, and drawing a pension, there are nt the present time on the rolls the names of 888 widows of Revolutionary soldiers. . Cuui!cn BURNT.-The Presbyterian church at Daodridge, East Tennes? see, was totally destroyed by fire at " < an early hour Saturday morning, sup? posed to have been caused by the .explosion of one of the lamps, which had not been entirely extinguished the eight previous. Mr. A. A. Low, of New York, visited the library of the University of Virginia on the 10th of last month, and on leaving handed the librarian, Mr. Weston backer, a check for $500. Rev. Elijah James, a colored preacher of the Baptist persuasion, was instantly killed' in James City, near Newborn, N. C., on Saturday last, by a colored man named Mingo Jones. Advices from Venezuela announce tho death of General Jose Ta de Mo nagas, President of Venezuela. Gen. Monugas was a revolutionary leader for many years, and was one of the most dreaded, because tho most popular among the people of all the , prominent men in bis country. i REGISTERED LETTERS.-Tho Post? master-General has ordered that, after January 1st, the fee on regis? tered letters shall be fifteen cents, instead of twenty cents, us at present. 'This is a step in the right direction; the New York Tri? bune thinks still, the true wny to re? sume specie payments is to begin the work of redemption at once.
