This power has been accurately surveyed by Prof. John LeConte, of tho Booth Ca? rolina University. He ostimatca that by doubling thc original capacity of tho Canal, ns required by tho Act, that the power sccureil to Bridge street will bc 355 horse-power, the average hoad being four Icon feet; and from bridge street to its mouth 532 horso-power, with an average head of twenty-one feet, anet a current of ono foot per second. With a current of two feet per second tho powers would bo 710 and 1,004 horse-power; and if tho ma? chinery is not run at night the powor may bc doublet!, by accumulating water in re? servoirs. "Aa tho supply of water," says Prof. LeConte, "which may bo turned from tho River into tho Canal at its hoad is almost unlimited, thc Canal can be enlarged to an extent commensurate with tho demand for water power. If desired, it may bo made to supply water to tho oxtcnt of 5,000 horso-power or more. In fact, by very simple arrangements, one-third, or one half, or even more, of thc wholo water in Rroad Rtver might he tuvnod into such an enlarged Canal." This water power is within tho limits of the city of Columbia, anti contiguous to railroads which connect it with nearly every County in tho State of South Caroli? na, anel with tho atljoining States of North Carolina and Georgia, amt their abunelant supplies of cotton, rice, corn, wheat, beef, pork, anel other vegetable and animal pro? ductions, anel also in daily communication with tho sea-ports of Charleston, Savannah and Wilmington. The city is supplied with gas and fine water; the climate is sa? lubrious and healthy, being above tho miasmatic region; landa in the vicinity aro cheap, anti the soil fertile; and thcro aro but few sections in the South which present greater attractions for settlement or resilience. The water power, from its magnitude and ailvantuges, is unequaled by any in South Carolina, anti unsurpassed by any in tho Southoru country.
