River into tho Canal at its hoad is almost
unlimited, thc Canal can be enlarged to an
extent commensurate with tho demand for
water power. If desired, it may bo made
to supply water to tho oxtcnt of 5,000
horso-power or more. In fact, by very
simple arrangements, one-third, or one
half, or even more, of thc wholo water in
Rroad Rtver might he tuvnod into such an
enlarged Canal."
This water power is within tho limits of
the city of Columbia, anti contiguous to
railroads which connect it with nearly
every County in tho State of South Caroli?
na, anel with tho atljoining States of North
Carolina and Georgia, amt their abunelant
supplies of cotton, rice, corn, wheat, beef,
pork, anel other vegetable and animal pro?
ductions, anel also in daily communication
with tho sea-ports of Charleston, Savannah
and Wilmington. The city is supplied
with gas and fine water; the climate is sa?
lubrious and healthy, being above tho
miasmatic region; landa in the vicinity
aro cheap, anti the soil fertile; and thcro
aro but few sections in the South which
present greater attractions for settlement
or resilience. The water power, from its
magnitude and ailvantuges, is unequaled
by any in South Carolina, anti unsurpassed
by any in tho Southoru country.
The property will bc sold on the follow?
ing conditions, to wit: 1ft. The purchaser
shall, within two years from the date of
conveyance, complete tho widening and
deopening of said Canal to at least twice
its original capacity. [Its original capaci?
ty was fifteen feet wide at top, eight feet
at bottom, and four feet in depth. To
double it, according to Prof. LoConte's re?
port, it will require tho removal of 30,107
cubic yards of earth, and 3,200 cubic yards
of stone, to Brielge street; and from Bridge
stroet to its mouth 22,17?; cubic yards of
earth, but no stone.] That the same shall
always bo kept open for boating purposes,
freo t)f charges, for toll or otherwise, to
where it is now used. [ This will not inter?
fere at all with the water power for driving
machinery, as boats only descend as far as
tho first lock, near Upper street.] That
the water shall not ho permitted to Docomo
stagnant, aud that it shall not bo used for
other than hydraulic purposes. And that
there shall b? a reservation to the Stute of j
water power sufficient for tho purposes of
the State Penitentiary, for all time, free of
charge. [This is estimated, at the maxi?
mum, at 100 horoe-power ] Anti upon thc
