We take the following article from tho Macon Telegraph. Such infamy as it describes, is the . natural off? spring of radical doctrines: When we republished, a few days si nco, from the .Washington National Intelligencer, a statement, that instru? menta of torturo had been applied, in Fort Pulaski, to the Government witnesses in the Ashburn case, we did it entirely upon the responsibility of that paper, and with an honest in? credulity of t_e whole thing. It seemed to us impossible of be? lief, that torture should be applied to witnesses in legal or military investi? gations, under the authority of tho United States Government, in this the nineteenth century of the Chris? tian era. But incredible as this horrid stigma upon civilization, Christianity and republicanism may appear, we are compelled to believe it; and that the dungeons of Fort Pulaski have reverberated with the half stifled groans and screams of victims tortured by a contrivance brought there for the purpose, in order "to make them tell the truth,' or, in other words, to give such testimony as waa desired by the prosecutors. In conversation with one of the most eminent oitizens of Macon ?esterday, he assured ns that Gen [eade explained to him in Atlanta week before last, tho whole modus operandi of this instrument of tor ture. Meade described it as a box sufficiently capacious to admit the victim, and then arranged for com pression by screws, by which a force could be brought upon the prisoner sufficient to "squeeze the breath out of him." It was also provided with a steam apparatus connected with the throttling box by pipes, and, upon turning a faucet, jets of steam were thrown in, which added materially to the anguish of suffocation. This machine was applied to three of the witnesses-Betts, Marshall and negro-with entire efficiency. The negro gave in, in a moment, and cried out that he would swear to any thing if they would only let him out of that box. The foregoing is the statement of leading citizen of Macon-a man whose word nobody doubts-as to what was voluntarily said in his hearing by Gen. Meade himself Are more words wanted by way of improvement? Is it possible to add to the force of the facts themselves iu showing the depth of degradation to which radical rule has brought the ( American Government? AN ASTOUNDING AND CONFOUNDINO DISCOVERY.-We havo an enchanted fahd in Alaska. Here is what a Bus sian guide told a Californian, who asked about a range of mountains near Sitka: "They are mighty in size, and cause much cold. Wonder ful things are told of them. It is said that in some places th ero aro deep pools and lakes, in which dwell mon sters-serpents as long as a fir tree which, when they are in tho open sea, would commit mighty damage Oue thing which the Indians tell for certain-that yonder, far away the North, in the heart of these hills there is a wonderful valley, so nar row that only at mid-day is the face of the sun to be seen. That valley loy undiscovered and unknown for thousands of years; no person dreamed of its existence; but, last, a long time ago, two Indiar hunters entered it by chance, au then what do you think they found? They found a small tribe of unknown people, speaking an unknown tongue, who had lived there since the crea? tion of the world, and without know? ing that other beings existed. An Eastern paper says the decks of the steamer City of Boston, in the recent collision on the Sound, afford? ed Borne pitiable displays of the selfishness of human nature. One man fastened a life-preserver about his body, and silenced his wife, who was crying for one, with the words, "Don't moke such a fuss aboutit; perhaps you will get one before fong." Another stalwart fellow took a life-preserver from a young lady, and buckled it on himself. The latest Yankee invention is the economic cheroot, one of which is twice the length of the ordinary, and herein s ithe economy. The Govern? ment taxes cigars without regard to length, and the application of a knife wiU make one of these into two. A married woman in Wisconsin says, that when her husband is a little drunk, he kicks her, and when he is very drunk, she kicks him. She congratulates herself that she does the greater port of the kicking. Taking things for granted is some? times a mistake. Illustrations : Tak? ing a woman as a wife for a lamb and finding her a tigress; or a man as a husband for a gentleman and finding him a brute and a beast. Antonousa Kastanopoulo is the name of the Cretan girl who is fight? ing in the revolution. She is nine? teen years old, cannot read, smokes cigarettes, is rather pretty, and has 500 men under her command. Dealers in hair in Paris find the supply running short, and children are robbed of their luxuriant locks in passing alone through the city. Cincinnati has 266 Brown families, 240 of tho Jones, 200 Williams, 380 Millers, 400 Myers and 150 Schmidts. SPECIAL NOTICES. P NATURE IS TUE GREAT PHYSI? CIAN.-Thi? is now admitted, by the me- | dicsl profession, aa a fundamental princi? pio of healing science. It ie wisoly I provided by tho human economy that | whenever anything is wrong in the phyai cal system, thc natural forces of the body Aro brought to bear to expel the disease. Tho great aim, therefore, ia to strengthen tho natural powers. Thia has been kept in view by tho skillful compounders of HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTER8, which operates to give frosh vitality to all the organa of the body. Tho efleet of thia medicino upon tho stomach, the livor and the kidneys, is prompt and decisive. Tho patient, who ia wieo enongh to qnit drug? ging and try tho Bitters, soon feels as if j ho had taken a now loase o.' lifo, and as he continues the uso of the artiole he is over? joyed to find tho streams of health cours? ing through his frame. It is prepared with great care, and its component parts aro entiroly vegetable. It is free from the objections so often urged against prepara? tions of tho kind. As a medical agent it has no eqnal, while its pleasing flavor and healthful effects have made it a general favorite. It ia froo from all properties calculated to impair the system, and its operations aro at once mild, soothing and efficient. All who have used Hosteler's Stomach Bittora attest its virtues and commend it to uso. Even those who aro in the enjoyment of | perfect health frequently have need to have recourse to tonics as preventives of j disease. We are never too well armed against tho assaults of "the ills that flesh is heir to." In health or sickness this tonic cannot be taken regularly without j giving vitality and elasticity to tho sys tem._'_Joly 17 t>t ?MANHOOD."-Another Now Medical Pamphlet from tho per of Dr. Curtis.
