MISOBIiLANT A TERRIBLE REVENGE.-Au ex? change mentions a young man by the name o? G. W. Porter, -whoso pa? rents, brothers, sisters and relatives were all murdered at Redwood, Min? nesota, in the great Indian massacre of 1861. He is tho solo survivor, and was tho only ono left to commnnicatA the mournfnl intelligence to the nearest settlement. Btreft in one brief hour of all that ho held dear on earth, and with the victims of savago ferocity extended in death before him, he took a solemn vow of ven? geance. How well he has performed that vow, the reader may judge when we state that in six years, young Porter has, alone, and with the assistance of nothing but his trusty rifle, sent to tho happy hunting grounds the souls of 108 Indian braves. Ho carries with him a piece of cane brake, about twelve inches in length, and when? ever he killed an Indian, he would make a notch in this. One hundred and eight notches are now to be counted on tho pioco of cane alluded to, the last ono being cut on Christ? mas, 1867. Surely, young Porter has been an avenging Nemesis on the footsteps of those who slaughtered his kindred. The Indians killed embraced repre? sentatives from nearly every tribe on the plains. By night and by dn>, ho has followed them through the track? less forests, over desert wastes, by thc mountain side and in the lonely glen, has he pursued his victims, until the crack of the rifle and the death yell proclaimed that another red skin had been sent to his final account, and sated with blood tho vengeance of his pursuer. Porter has not passed through all these perilous scenes un? scathed. His body hus been riddled by eleven bullets, and slushed in thirty-three places by tko knife. But he hos withstood all, come out vic? torious, and now exhibits with pride the trophies of his prowess. Truly, his parents and his relatives have been deeply, terribly avenged. Mr. Charles Dickens' account of the "thieves' den" in Oliver Twist, has found a parallel in Now York city, whore tho police have just suc? ceeded in breaking up a large gang of thieves, consisting of two men, two women and niuo boys. The headquarters of tho family was in Crosby street, and hero is whero the "Fagin" of tho coinpuuy, Frank Oliver, marshalled his young candi? dates each morning, and assigned them to a district in which to ply their vocation. Each morning, tho newspapers wero read to ascertain if any largo meetings were to be held, and, if so, a special force was de? spatched to tho placo. The plunder, consisting of jewelry and every kind of wearingapparel, from beautiful vel? vet and chinchilla cloaks and dresses down to a pair of silk gloves or a pocket handkerchief, was all handed over to Oliver, who paid a certain per cent, to tho operators for their services. Shakspeare must have had a vision of tho modern bonnet when, in "Tho Taming of the Shrew," he wrote the following: Petruchio-"Why this was moulded on a porringer; A velvet dish; fie, fie! * * * * Why 'tis a cockle or a walnut shell, A knack, a toy, a trick; a baby's cap; Away with it! come, let mo have: a bigger." Katharina-"I'll havono bigger; this doth fit tho time; And gentlewomen were such caps as these." There is a story from California of bnrglars, who at midnight climbed up to a chamber window and cautious? ly opened it. Tho occupant chanced to bo awake, crept softly to the win? dow, and just as tho robber's faco appeared, presented the smooth muz? zles of two revolvers, with the in? junction: "You get!" "You bot!" replied the house? breaker, dropping and running. There is no moro pithy dialogue on record. A minister, traveling in Louisiana, discovered a colored church remarka? bly supplied with officers.
