COLUMBIA. Friday Morning, December 7, 1866. Tile- Labor Quest iou. A Louisiana cotemporary, the Iber ville Sontli, says that the foreigners, the coolies and the freedmen are all "v'ery well in their way, but that nei? ther tho one nor the other, nor all of them, will supply thc great void of labor, while we ourselves continue to talk, grumble, loaf and brag about what wc used to be. The stubborn truth of tho matter is this, that Southern men and wo? men and their children, have to go to work, if they may reasonably ex? pect to repair their shuttered fortunes, or to t:.avc their section from the fate of Jamaica or Hayti. The age of idleness is past. Wo must all work, or all sink. Wc havehio longer "fa? ther's plantation and nigger-s to fall back upon." Thc farmer is .well-nigh worthless, and tho "niggers" ave free; there is nothing left for us but brains and hands, and there is plenty of work for both. Is not thc truth of this self-evident to every thinking mind? Thc scanty, half performed work of thc few freed? men who evince a desire to work, should be supplied by the young men of the other race, who know tho value of industry and labor in the great work of recuperation. Thc freed negro knows little about this, and cares less; his highest ambition, in his new condition, being to do as lit? tle as he can, and get enough to eat and something to oover him. And this is more natural, and should be considered more excusable than many of us aro ready to concede. The transition from slavery and compul? sory labor, bo that labor never so light, was too sudden, not to have just such an effect upon an ignorant and uneducated class, who knew comparatively littlo of thc value oi labor and industry to tho welfare oi society, or the prosperity of a coun? try. They performed this task, were led and clad, and enjoyed themselves beyond this they never thought oi eared for. All this has passed away, and tin negro is no longer compulsorily under our control. The services o the race, cither in the field, or m do? mestic service, are comparatively worthless. This state of affairs hap pens when wo require ineroaset labor--when our fields and home.' laid desolate, require the larges amount of manual labor and untiring industry. There is nothing left ti us, but to go to work ourselvc .; nix when wo say work, we mean work not in the learned professions, no behind the counter, not speculatinj in politics-tho course of tho radical: or the policy of tho President. Ii days gone by, we had no objection b college education, or to the numeren * candidates for learned professions but it did strike us with surpriso t see, tho other day, snell a long list o admissions to the bar, granted b; our Court of Appeals. It may be al right-the prospect is that the prac tico of the law will be lucrative fo some years to come; but wo canno avoid thinking, that the plainer o more practical paths of industry would bo more conducive to tho rc euperation of tho South, and th retrieval of our past prosperity. Brains and hands ! The forme qualification is very good for politio the pulpit, bar, or medical profession but these are pretty well filled forth present, and will answer our pur poses for some years to come.
