Tho committee appointed by the Lahor Conventiofi, at Baltimore, waited on the President to-day. Mr. Hinchliffe, the spokesman, disclaimed connection with any party, in a political sense, or that tho movement was for political power. He urged that eight horns' labor per day should be legalized; that thc public lands should be distributed so as to be reached by labor- \ ers, instead of capitalists, and that the workingmen shall bo protected against convict labor. He asked tho President's assistance to accomplish these measures* for the workingmen. In .reply, tho Presi? dent said ho was opposed to the present system of convict labor, on account of its unjust, discriminating and degrading in lluonces. He desired to sco labor elevated, and such always bad been bis position; his whole history showed ho was against monopoly of Ute" public land?. He was for shortening tho hours of labor to the least number consistent to the interests of all, and the laboring-men could rely upon bin influence when it could bc given in their behalf; they had his sympathies and liest feelings in their cause.
