A Reminiscence or Troy. TROX THB SCHOLIABT. It wis the ninth year of the Trojan war A tedious pail at best; A lot of aa were Bitting by the ah ore Tydldee, Phocas, Castor, and the rest, Some whittling shingles, and some stringing bows, And cutting np onr friends, and cutting np oar foes. Down from Ute tenta above there came a man, Woo took a carap-atool by Tydldes's side. HeMned oar tatt, and. pointing to the pan Upon the embers where our pork was med, Said be would eat the onions and the leeka. Bat that fried porkVas rood not flt for Greeks. "Look at the med of Thebes," he said, "and then Look at those cowards in the plaina below ; Ton see how ox-like are the ox red men; Toa see how sheepish motton eaters grow. Stlct to thu vegetable rood or mine: Men who eat pork, grunt, root, and Bleep, like awlne." laughed, and some grew mad, and some grew red: The pork waa hissing; but his point was clear, still no one answered him, till Nestor said. "One inference that I woo d draw la here: Ton vegetarians, who thu? educate na, Thoa far have turned out very small potatoes." TBE RATZ ROAD sar ASH. Purtle ulara or the Accident on the WU- | minston ami Weldon Railroad. The Wilmington Star brings os the following { details of the terrible accident on the Wil? mington and Weldon Railroad on Thursday j night: When the train doe here at three o'clock yesterday morning had arrived at a point j abooLsne mlle the other side of Dudley's, and abor?t eight miles from Goldsaoro', lt being be? tween eleven and twelve o'clock, the amosing car ran off the track. The accident was Im? mediately discovered by Captain Everett, the conductor ID charge, who Instantly pulled the bell to give the necessary warning. At this Mme the first-class coach and the sleeping car J were running smoothly on the track, and he ordered the brakes on the smoking car with the hope that lt would break loose irom the other cars; bnt lost as be had done so be became aware or.the startling fact, which be bad not before suspected, that they were on the point of crossing a dangerous txestle, one of the highest on the road. He bad hardly realized the fact, he I standing on the platform of the smoking j ear at the time, belora the first-class | car and the sleeping car, tearing loee from the smoking car, had plunged over the side of toe trestle Into the abyss below, both care taming completely over and going down the | aldo of the embankment bottom upwards. Immediate measures were taken to rescue the | passengers, among whom were several ladles. The top of the cars in going down the em? bankment had become BO badly breken that I the passengers could not stand upright, and when an entrance was effected there was dis? covered a heterogeneous mass of men and women, valises and carpet sacks, baskets and boxes, and all the other appurtenances usnaliy . found In snob conveyances. The passengers war? all relieved from their uncomfortable positions as soon as possible, and all are loud In their praise of Captains Everett and South-1 all, the latter bel OK In- charge of the sleeping, car well aa Mr. Bell, formerly connected with the Southern Express Company, for their un? tiring energies in securing their safe trans? portation from the wrecked cars to places of J security and comfort. As soon as the last passenger had been re- j moved from the wrecks, Captain Everett dispatched the engine to Dudley's to meet; the freight train which was doe at that point, whea the coach which usually accompanies It was secured and returned for the passengers, wbo were taken to Dudley's, where they awaited the train whloh lett here at 10.40 P. IC,-vpon Ita arriva), one of the coaches was appropriated and the passengers were brought on to this city, arriving here at about seven o'clock. In the meantime, the train leaving bera at 10.40 P. M. awaited the arrival of the I 6.30 train for thia place, when the passengers were to be transferred. That-there were no lives lost by the acci? dent was, nader the circumstances, almost a I miracle. The following is a partial Mst of the wounded : W. H. Chew, or Augusta, Ga., ankle badly sprained and hip injured; Mrs, Chew, wife or the above, received a severe contusion on the forehead; two ladles accom- ] panylng Mr. and Tirs. Chew, received no Inju? ries whatever; Mr. Chambers, of New Orleans, waa severely injured about the lace, back and breast; Mrs. M. A. Waller, of Montgomery, Ala., niece of Mr. Chambers, was seriously bruised about the body; a S. Solomons, super? intendent of the Northeastern Railroad, South Carolina, was slightly braised on the knee; W. J. Smith, Abbeville, S. C., badly Injured about the head. There were several others who re-1 calved slight injuries. We are glad to learn that none of the wounded are considered seri? ously hurt. The accident, we are Informed, was oaused by a misplaced rall, which waa found after the I accident, tamed over on one side, and loose, bat with the spikes driven firmly into the ties. Whether the position of the rail was the result of accident or design ls a matter for conjec? ture, bat IA supposed by some that it was pur? posely misplaced by some one with the Inten? tion or throwing the train off the track. The distan oe from the top of the trestle to the bed of the small stream down to which the cara were precipitated, was about twenty-five or thirty feet, and the rear end of the sleeping car waa driven some distance nuder the water. We learn that the road will probably be clear in time for the train? to pass this morang. The two cara were badly amashed, and tho traes; considerably tom op in the Vicinity of the trestle, whlob was about the exte nt of the damage to the road.
