Inves-ed Kin? ano Queen, We cope with any fate, Invincible-serene 1 .i/O?' WAS THAT FOR Hi QU ? A Man and Woman Perform the Double Trapeze Haifa Mile High. [From the Indianapolis Sentinel. J. ?. Warner, of the Great Pacific Combina? tion, ls the reotless and enterprit-iog manager of some thirty-eight summers, who modestly hides behind a big diamond breastpin, and ls not satisfied with owning the biggest ele phant and the only two-hoi ned rhinoceros on this continent, with thirty cages of wild beasts, a museum and splendid circus, exhlbi led under ten different pavilions, but is dying to give the people more ol' the good thing for tir ty cents. Warner bas actually persuaded a young and beautiful Spanish giri, named Leona Dare, who does marvellous teats upoa the trapeze In the circus, to make bal? loon ascensions. Tr-s trial trip was made on Thursday morning ut a point of about nine "miles southed of our city. The balloon was duly inflated, and at a quarter to eight was cut loose, and the Une tcirmed Leona, In circus clothes, dangling downward Irom the trapeze oar, holding in her teeth a strap which encircled the waist of Tom? my Hall, her compauion lor her Arel voyage in the air, lelt terra Arma. Everything was still as death, and lt was observed that Hall weak? ened a little; but the plucky "Quten ol' the An? tilles," Leona, was perfectly cool. Just as soon us they len the earth Leona commenced spin? ning Hall around until it made us giddy. Alter this performance, and about three hundred feet in the air, they commenced ttieir hifalutin performances, known in show language as the double trapeze; and almost everybody who has attended the circus can imagine much better than we can describe their various evolutions and gyrations. They performed ali of the difficult and hazardous teats at an altitude ot a half-mile wlih the same reckless daring that characterizes their performances under the pavilion, where, if they were to tumble, their fall would not ex? ceed thirty feet. Up, up, they went, until they were scarcely larget lhan our hands, and when WM looked at them through a glass, pro? vided for the occasion, we breathed free, and felt a relief to see that they had climbed upon (heir trapeze bar, and were apparently enjoy? ing a tete-a-teie while resting from their ex? citing and perilous exercises. The balloon descended very rapidly, and landed about a half mile from the starling point In an open field, and our party rode up In lime lo witness their alighting. Hall was silent aud sober, while Leona laughingly said to Warnen "How was that tor high ?" Warner, the satis? fied manager, smiled, and expressed his ap? proval of the trip, and wi u k ir LT slyly at us, as much as to say, "I have the trick now lhai will make opposition take a back seat." .1 PERILOUS POSITION. A Man In the Jaws of a Lion. Lengel, the lion tamer, has achieved noto? riety by the number of times he has suffered laceration by the claws and teeth ot caged animals. He was at Portage City, Minnesota, a few days aco, exhibiting lils liou-taming abilities in a circus. One of his cages contain? ed three partially tamed brutes-two lionesses rrad a lion. He had fouud, contrary ;o usual experience, that the male lion was (he most crafty of the three, and on two occasions be? fore the one at Portage City, he had delected the huge fellow in the act oi sneaking up to oeize his legs. During the afternoon exhi? bition at Portage City the tamer was going through his usual performance in this cage, with two men stationed ouiside with iron rods between the bars of the cage to assist, lt necessity, in warding off attack. The lion had somewhat puzzled him, as manifesting a dif? ferent nature from that of any with which he bad dealt, and for that reason he kept his eye upon him; but at one point he was obliged to turn and face the two lionesses as they passed him, leaving tbe lion to be watched by the ai tendant-'. But Ihe attendants failed to see the monster sneak along the floor. The au? dience were watching more closely, the dan? ger was seen, and a cry of alarm was raised, but lt was too late, the monster's Jaws had closed on the calf ol Lengel's rlsrht leg, the teeth met, and Lengel fell io the lloor ol the cage. His club flew irom his hand as he tell, and was beyond his reach; ihe moment waa one of terrible suspense; ihe spectators were terrified, and the two attendants paral) z ed at the result ot their carelessness. But Lengel's presence ot mind* did not desert him. The lion, even in his rage, could not forget the power of bis fallon antag? onist, and loosened his hold for a moment, and before the lioness could gather for an at? tack ihe tamer was on his teer, seized his whip aqd attacked his foe, lashing bim into the corner. Leaving the cage, Leugel walked to his dressing box, across the ring, where he sank faint from the loss of blood. It was found that no bones were broken, but the wounds were so large and dee > that the sur? geon who dressed them probed them with his n?ger and failed to touch the end. Lengel has been five times before bi nen by his pei fi, and shows a scarred body, but In every case before his wounds have been from lionesses. This, be thinks, is the second case in which he has been intentionally bitten, the other four being accidents, when, in their snarls amoDg themselves, they have seized him by mistake.
