Scene at tbe Fair Groanrtt-Who ' the Prlzei, ?tc. Tbe long talked of to* mame nt made iti appearance yesterday morning In the pe of a number of young knights, who we be seen galloping down the st re elf. ab ot o'clock, to the rendezvous on the Bal The day was warm and pleasant, and w. unusual an exhibition in prospect, numb? citizens waited along the sidewalks of Me street to see the gallant company marci They rode In single file upon their prai chargers, and were preceded by a large wi drawn by four fine horses decorated witt tl-colored plumes. In the wagon wast band of music, which enlivened the mar airs, amusing and sentimental. The kn followed slowly behind, sixteen in nui under the command of Herald Jame! Nelson, with whom rode Surgeon Ancrun The column marched up Meeting to B through Hasel to King, and up King tc Fair Grounds, attracting much admiratioi attention on their way. They were all in turne, and with their floating plumes, spangles and lace and velvet bravery, ma sensation among the ladies. The sound or their coming had prec them to the Fair Grounds, and a crowd present to welcome them as they filed the gate and halted in front of the large b lng. On the balcony were a number of la 'and out in the field, along the Une of th? Ing-course, were numerous vehicles ed with ladles and gentlemen, knights were allowed a half hour to pare, and then formed near the course, was a straight and level stretch of about hundred and fifty yards. The first ring hu D g on an Iron hoop fastened to a gall looking E true tn re about seven) y-flve yards 1 the starting point. The other structures \ along the course, the second being tw yards from the first, and the third twi yards beyond. By the rules agreed to, distance of three hundred and seventy feet was to begone over in nine second less; the rlbgs were each to count one; i knight was to have three tilts, and If dropped his lance or the ring from the p after carrying lt the count was lost. The b Iron rings, one inch and a half in diam? were then hung in position, and the kni| rode as follows: Knig?U8. Names. Total Ri Klngstree-0. P. Nelson, Kingstree. Eutaw-w. Conner, charleston. The Knights of Eutaw, (Mr. Conner, Charleston,) St. John's and Pinopolis hav both carried four rings, the judges decU that they ahould ruc, a single course for l first prize. This being done, Eutaw and John's failed in taking off a ring, but Pino; Us carried the first one and was awarded l first prize. Another course was ordered between Eut, and St. John's for the second prize, and Eut tilted first. The Iron hooks to which the rio were hung had been befare objected to some of the knights as dangerous, as t sequel showed they were right. The knlg Etruck the two first rings, but tailed to cai .them. He addressed hlB lance to the thi ring and struck the lion hook fairly in the cc tre. The metal broke like a dried stick, ai a piece ol lt struck the knight on ;he fat giving him a sharp cut on the cheek, Just mil lng the right eye. Surgeon Ancrum was ca ed upon rather unexpectedly, but quickly i tended to the wounded knight. The accide created some excitement, but the ring havli been placed In ""position, the Knight nf ? John's ran his course, and having taken < one ring, was awarded the second prize. The fourth prize for horsemanship was mo difflcdlt to be awarded. Th? knights, in tur galloped over the course, and having be? then drawn up lb front of the Judge's stan the prizes were awarded as lollowa : First pilze, a double case gold watch, vail (250, to Knight of Pinopolis. Tne fourth prize, a silver cup, was decide bv the Judges to lie between the Knights i Chaneston and Fairfield, and ordered them i run a lilt for lt. The Knight of Charleston di dared that, as the originator and manager < the Tournament, he had not intended to coi tend for any ot the prizes, and positively d clined to Ult for this one. The prize was tbe awarded to the Knight of Fairfield. The day was now declining, and the crow o? vehicles and pedestrians began to move o the grounds. The array of knights was con posed principally of gentlemen from lb country, and the air of busifiess about tb affai r extinguished the romance which mlgt have mingled with the occasion. This we observable In the absence of a crown and Queen of Love and Beauty, chosen by the vii ter in the tourney to wear ir. The exhlbitiot however, afforded much pleasure to loos present, and will bear a repetition"at no dis tant day. CLUBS AND STARS.-W. It is now reorganized on a complete footing, and cannot lull to accomplish much good among the manners who visit the city. THE JET?U KALL.-The first annual soiree of | the .ffitna Steam-Fire Engine Company took place last evening at their hall in Queen street, and proved a most delightful success. The adjoining hall of Hook and Ladder Com? pany, No. 1, was thrown open, and with a fine band of music stationed In the connecting doorway, afforded a splendid space for tue terpsichorean pleasures of the evening. The hall was brilliantly illuminated, and a large number of the fair sex had prepared them? selves lor the conquests and enjoyments which the occasion seemed to portend. Although they bad lain aside their red coats, the boys retained all the Joyous spirits they usually covered, and with Just an agreeable competi? tion for partners, the evening sped pleasantly away. The season has been handsomely In? augurated by the .Etnas, and not one of the young ladies who attended the ball, and are able to read this In the morning, will refuse to call lt one of the pleasantest entertainments they ever were at. THE ACADEMY OF Mosio.-The. announce? ment yesterday, that instead of the concerts the WatklnB Troupe would give a performance at the Academy, to which the tlc!:et-holders In the prize scheme would be admitted free, spreai through the city like wildfire, and ear- j ly In the evening lhere was a rush for the seats, the like ol which was never dreamed of | by the most enthusiastic of agents and mana? gers. The orchestra choir and parquette were s.oon filled, bul the crowd kept pouring in a; if the Academy was an India rubber' bail, which could stretch out and accommo? date any number. The whole space was soon j Jammed with the crowd, and In the aisles and near the walla a dense mass of faces met the view. The doors fjr twenty feet out were wedged up with those pushing to get in, and hundreds turned away In disgust. The galle? ries were a living mass, and In every available standing place In the house was a pair of feet which the owner could hardly swear to as he was swayed backwards and forwards by the crowd. The play "Kathleen Mavourneen" has been given here before, but a more apprecia? tive house the.Watklnses never had, to say no? thing of its size. The troupe were inspired by the scene and played with a spirit aod cor- J redness which evoked from time to time I thundering applause. Between the first and second ar.? the Tumbleronlcon prevailed, and the audience were In raptures. Altogether the monster house was in a most pleasant humor, and thoroughly enjoyed the entertain? ment. The Watklnses appear again this even? ing in the thrilling drama of Norah O'Neil.
