Charleston bas never seen a more brilliant audience than that which, last night, filled the performance began, there was ne at anding room. Every Inch of available ?pace appeared to be oc? cupied, and a few stragglers had found their way into the orchestra. S Mila? Misaba7' sang ,* N{ge? 1? ye&Ice (with Signor BrignolL) This was encored. In tbe sec? ond part abe sang Les Bluets, a valse by Cohen. This val=e ls far more dim cn it than melodious, but it served to show the thorough cultivation, and surprising flexibility or Mlle. Nilsson's voice. The gem of the evening was the Mad Scene, frota Hamlet. The abrupt change from the pathetic to the tragic; the weird smile, the maniac laugh and melting playfulness, succeeded by bursts of passionate grief-made up a picture of the crazed Ophelia strikingly true to natnre, and; therefore, tbe perfection or art. The wonder? ful gray eyes seemed to flash fire. For a moment lt was neither Nilsson nor Ophelia, but the Scan dmavjut priestess chanting War Sagas to her hardy Norsemen. When the last note died away a storm of applause shook the building, and Mlle. Nilsson, with her own inimitable grace, bowed and smiled her thanks. - As an encore to Les Blue's, Mlle. Nilsson sang Old Folks at Home with a pathos that touched every heart It was ap? plauded to the echo. Mlle, Nilsson ls a woman of great genius, and, If "cotton were only selling at twenty-five cents a pound, Charleston wonld keep her at thc Academy until the heats of summer. There-la, however, good grounds ror believing that Mlle. Nilsson.will visit Charleston when Bhe ap? pears In opera next winter. Miss Cary Bang very finely, and confirmed aft the favorable impressions made by her first ap? pearance. The aria from 17 Oiuramento waa encored, and Miss Cary sang a lullaby which pro? voked a gentle Georgian to declare that "any baby who wouldn't go to sleep after that onght to be killed outright." This attractive troupe has long established itself as a favorite rme with the Charleston pub Wfrftnd the announcement of their engagement at the Academy would be received with pleas are by aH of our theatre-goers. In the coming cele? brations which m?L tace place here daring the first week in May, a large number of visitors wm be collected in the city, and a more propitious season for the advent or "The Violets of the Stage" could hardly be selected. We trust that the arrangements will soon be perfected by Mr. Levin, the agent for the troupe, who is now in the city, and that ere long their posters will an? nounce the early appearance, at the Academy, of the fair Sisters and the laughter-moving Bishop. THE CATHOLIC FJJB-SEVENTH DAT.-A pleasing and interesting feature of the fair yes? terday was the presence of the Catholic male and female orphans at h air-pant 4 o'clock io the after? noon, la compliance with an invitation extended to them by the managers. They aumbered*in all about one hundred, and what-with the grabs and refreshmsnts which were furnished them, passed a joyous, happy hour among the tables. The Right Rev. Bishop Lynch was present, aad added great? ly to their enjoyment by bis pleasant and paternal manner. Many merchants and professional men. were also to be seen, who evinced much sind reeling and consideration for the y outhf a l visitors in whose midst they were moving. The beautiful decorations or the hall, the splendidly furnished tables, and, above all, the considerate attentions which they received, we rs a never falling source of admiration and pleasure to the youthful assem? blage, and the thorough enjoyment which was visible In each countenance durlug the visit was tke highest reward their kind entertainers could receive. . In the evening the hah presented the usual animated scene ol hundreds of young people moving slowly around, by twos and -threes, langhing and chatting, many bearing the cus* tomary raffle Hst, which was ever ready to be pre ? seated when aj>romlslng visitor of the male kind I made his appearance. The advent from time to time or these welcome visitors kept the Hst bear? ers pretty busy until the hour for closing. A very striking addition to the handsome-exhibition was a pair or beautiful lace quilts. These ware suspended across the centr? or the hall' upon a cord, and showed to great advantage, as they hung against a background or pink cloth. They are a present from Mrs. Rice, or Philadelphia, and were received in the afternoon through Mr. Rice, or the firm or McLloyARlce. Tho .embroidery upon each 13 or a different device, and both are valuable 'and splendid articles. The number or visitors last evening was not as great as lt shoald have been, and, as on Saturday, this was attrib? uted to the attractions or the Nilsson concert. To night-there is no such excuse, and a large at? tendance is expected. The lair is drawing to a dose, and all who take an interest tn its success should see that the noble sisterhood, for whose benefit it is held, receive during the two Jast even? ings that patronage and encouragement which they so well deserve.
