W. Herschell, at thc Cape of Good Hope, by means of h s famous twenty feet long reflecting telescope, with an eighteen and one-quarter Inch aperture, and other powerful Instruments. At this time great Interest was exhibited In the as? tronomical world, In the Investigations of Sir John Herschell, and Locke, who was then editor of the New York Sun, in order to create a sensation, r:published in that news? paper what purported to be a supplement to the Edinburgh Scientific Journa', giving the result of the great English astronomer's observations. The iuhabitablllty of thc planets and of thc moon has always be?n a question of deep Interest, and Locke's treatise had sufficient plausibility to dec-.lve the'credulous. particularly 'as the language carefully imitated the style or scientific report*, and suggested rather than as? serted that the moving ligures seen In the moon Were senti nt being.?. Even Intelligent persons hesitated to disbelieve the account, until In the al;w cours) of the passage of the ships of that day, the news came that no such report had been published tn the Edinburgh Scientific Journal. Charleston : Holmes's Bookhouse. Here is a book which without any special merit of ila own is yet very readable and en? tertaining. The author possesses bujt, lillie constructive talent; ber plot is a mere series of pictures and incidents without coherence. ?md with no very natural sequence or proba? bility; she also hicks the power of defining character accurately, un.l presenting it viv? idly; and, finally, lier style is here and lhere open to grave objections. No man in Iiis senses would have acted as she makes lier litro act in tit? crisis of his fate; and if lie had done so ho would certainly ?lave fully de? served all his future misfortunes. In spite, however, of these defects the "Shadow of Mo "ioch Mountain" is, upon the whole, decidedly interesting, and will doubtless be widely read. The sketches of Ainbricau rural life ute among the best we have seen in any late fic? tion, and are happily introduced. We ure inclined to think that Mrs. Austin can do much better work than she has here given us, but her present novel is at any rate a step in the right direction. Original Amer? ican fiction hus a wide field before it, and may be made of considerable importance io the literary development of the country. Dooks like the present one'show that it is possible to write au American novel whicli shall be faithful to tue genius loci, aud yet be neither fantastically absurd, like Mr. Judd's "Margaret," nor essentially vulgar, like Miss Alcott's "Jdhods." The example is a valuable ono, aud we hope will be widely followed. 3 ^^?^^ *' ?R WHILE some of the wiseacresin our Gene raj Assembly ace striving to re-establish^the Tjsury law, we>8ee that the great and pro? gressive Stateof Illinois is shrewdly tat?ng steps to strikaltom her statute "book a pre? cisely similar law. Within the last twenty-five years not less than a score of virulent poisons have bceu added to the repository or the medical profession. They are given lu small doses, otherwise they would destroy life immediately; but eveu in minute quantities, luey produce, ultimately, very disastrous effects. It ls unwise and-unphliosophl cal to employ, as remedies powerful and Insidi? ous drugs, which, in subjugating one disease, sow thc seeds of another s ill more unmanageable.
