We understand that a conference of thc representatives of the Reform party will be he held in Colombia, next week, for the purpose of taking into consideration the dangers which beset the body politic, and for adopting such ?neasr.res as may seem best calculated to insure the protection of society and the political redemption of the State. That conference should express, in council, the feelings and determination of the white people of South Carolina, and we urge every county to be represented, in its deliberations, by one or its most able and trustworthy citizens. The canvass of the popular vote shows with unmistakable clearness that the Btrength of the two political parties-the Radical party and the Conservative party is relatively unchanged. In our anxiety to conciliate the colored mao, we have gone just as far as dignity and honesty permit. We have accorded to tbe freedmen a full recog? nition of all their public and private rights, and from that recognition we cannot and do not recede. Yet no impression of moment has been made upon the negroes, and, as a race, they as bitterly oppose the efforts of the whites to reform the government as they did two years ago. They are incapable of conviction by reason ; ur they are satisfied that a continuance of Radical rule will con? fiscate to their use, under the forms of law, the lands and the homesteads which, they are taught to believe, belong of right to their race. There is too much reason to Tear that the colored man caonot be won by jonciliation and forbearance, and, while we lo not withdraw one syllable of oar ^.qui? escence in his stat us as a citizen, the white jeopleof the State cannot pander to his pas? sions, nor allow bim to make the white race lis political and social inferiors. We cannot live as we are. The time is ipproacbing when we must a ba nd ou our lonatry or save it. The time has come when he white people of the State should be fully )rganized, politically and socially, in the nterests of decency, security and peace. . . - . . ?fa. -. ' . ' '-Sfe The Magarlnei. MINISTER GAMBETTA told. a deputation of two thousand persons that the salvation of the French peopfe was in their own hands; the government could not even supply them with arms. This is too much. The French peasantry are expected to shed their blood, in a cause which they do not love, under .the leadership of men whom they cannot trust; and DOW they are invited to oppose the shot gun and scythe blade to heavy artil? lery and the needle-rifle. A correspondent informs us that the per? sons who stuffed the ballot-'^.ixes at two precincts in Chesterfield County have been arrested, and will have an examination to? morrow. The ballot-stuffing reduced the Reform majority in Chesterfield from 436 voles to 147 votes. THE Wlnnsboro' News believes that from three to fivo hundred illegal votes were cast in Fairfield County, and advises that the election be contested. (Sbiicotionol. MRS.
