BRUTAL ASSAULT UPON A WOMAN.-Frank j Oliver committed a most brutal assault upon Bell Maxwell, In Elliott street, Tuesday night, about 9 o'clock, by striking her repeated blows on the head with the butt of a pistol, cutting ber dreadfully and felling her senseless to the earth. He then assaulted Charles Bryant, who attempted to protect the woman, bat the noise of the scuffle brought the police on the ground, and they arrested Oliver before he could in filet any serions Injuries upon Bryant The prisoner was turned, over yesterday morning to Trial Justice Levy, who, after hearing the evidence, commlttedHhe accused to Jail, in de? fault of ball, on three separate indictments. FIRE.-At half-past ll o'clock last night, flames were discovered breaking through a I blacksmith shop, owned by Hr. Heffron, on the north side of Calhoun street, a few doors east of Meeting. The alarm waa promptly given, and the engines were soon on the 'ground. The adjoining buildings being of a combustible nature, were soon In ablaze. The blacksmith and wheelwright shop, and an unoccupied building to the east, with the residence of Hr. Heffron in the rear, all o? wood, were burned. Several houses in the vicinity caught from the sparks, but the fire was soon extinguished. As far as could be ascertained, there was no insurance. A brick building next to the fire, owned by Hr. C. W. Selgnious, and occupied by Messrs. Peas?. & Fordham, was In great danger, and was only saved by the exertions oi the firemen. The unoccupied wooden hous? was owned by Mr.. J.
