Typographical t'nion or Washington, on Sutunl iv nicht, had under consideration the case of the a.-:>"ca ion or admission of I.avalettc, one 0." thc colo, ed printers at the government office. Thc majority of thc committee on thc application reported that Lavalette had not served a regular apprenticeship, and made no recommendation. The miuority recommended his admission. After an excited debate a motion to postpone for one year prevallci >y a vote of 167 yeas to l-l nays. At the same meeting thc application of Lewis Douglass for admission was postponed io: one month. Ir is believed that thc Union will adopt the course of allowing the colored printers to work under a permit from the Union, but at the same time will refuse them admission as mem? bers. Had a direct rote been taken, it is asserted, Lavalette would have been rejected, the superin dent of public printing would have kept him af work,"and a strike would have ensued. The Colored Vote. i^f^ Tlie only plausible objection that cati be urged against a persistence in tho policy of a manly ariT uncompromising antagonism on the part of our white people towards the men who represent Radicalism in South Car? olina, consists in the faucicd clanger of re? pelling from our ranks those intelligent col? ored voters whose aid will be so necessary in hurling from power the present dishonest and abominable State Government. It would, of course, bc idle to deny that thc larger portion of the negro vote will, ie any even!, lie cast against us. But thc col? ored people are not all fools; and. though tho majority of thc ignorant field hands tb rough the country may still be deluded into sup? porting thc selfish knaves whose catspaws they have been so long, there is a large and constantly growing element among tho col? ored population whoJiavc the shrewdness to see thattherc is and must always be a full identity of interest between the whites and themselves. Bitter experience has taught thom iiow unscrupulous arc their Radical masters in making pledges and how faithless IQ performing them; and they arc fast open? ing their eyes to thc systematic selfishness of loaders who, in ever}- instance, quietly gob? ble thc official oyster while they throw thc shell to their black dupes. From this class of the colored people, who, already strong in numbers, are even stronger in intelligence and influence among their owu race, we look with confidence for help in the great work of thc political redemption of the State. Thc waite people arc ready to guarantee to thc colored citizen the full enjoyment of political equality and of all the rights to which ho is now entitled by law. Wc may not offer the "social equality" or thc "fort "acres and a mule" which have formed thc staple.of Radical promises ever since the close of the war; but what wdo oiler, w> mean in good faith to give. Showing thc freedman, as we can and shall do, that it only from those among whom he lias boen born and reared, and not from strange and hungry political adventurers, that he has to hope for substantial and steady assistance i his efforts to better his condition, we shall gradually but surely win him over to work with tts for the common weal. The white men of our State can eacli bring, on au av erage, at least*bne colored man to the poll to catt a vote for the overthrow of Radical ism. Active zeal and individual exertion only are needed to accomplish this result With a colored vote added to every white vole that can be polled against corruption and robbery, where would Scott, Chamber lain, Kimpton <fc Co. be? Are not the in torests at stake worth the effort ? Let the taxpayers ponder it well ! A "Lost Cause." THE Columbia Pheonix of Monday lias a striking leader upon "thc duty of the Amor "?can patriot in this period of his country's "career,"in the course of which it says: "Tho Winnsboro' New* take it for granted "that thc principle of State rights is gone "and gone forever. Wc take issue with thc " JVetM There is a ' lost cause," but this is "not it. Wc admit that it ?wry go down "beneath the surging waters of cpntraliza "tion. AVe admit that it reels and totten "bem ea th thc blows that lt is receivim " The country has decided against thc ' right " of secession,' but lhere are Slate rights and " there is State sovereignty s'.iort of seces "sion, and there are great States, North and "South and West, that still cling to this vi "tal doctrine, and there is, too, agivat party "that still puts this forth as its cardinal "creed. No, not yet have we despaired of "the republic-critical as its eas;; may now " be. Not yet have wc given up the cause "of constitutional government and of free "and coequal States. It may suit some men "and some journals to take the current, as "it passes by in its mad career and with its "turbid waters, and call it tlieir irresistible fate so to do. But not so with others of 11 moro hopeful aud faithful souls. They in intend to struggle with ' thc storms of fate.' They intend to ' luke anns against a sea of | "troubles, and by opposing, end them. ' And " wc will remind our friend and all others of ".little faith, ' that sea Herod all over titi? 'broad country-from thc lakes to thc guli, "and from the ocean to thc ocean-aro good aud true men, mostly of Uni Democratic party, who, with the co-operation of patriot "ic recruits from other parties, Intend to "make a persistent effort to overthrow the 'dominant party, and to bring the country 'back to its uormal coudition." Strike at Gruniteville. A correspondent writes that the spiuncrs of the Granitcvillc Factory struck on Thurs? day morning for higher wages, asserting that their pay was wholly insufficient as compensation for the work done. There was al the time of writing every indication that the strike would fail of success, as by 1 o'clock the superintendent, Mr. George Kelly, bad lilied nearly all the vacant places, and thc work was iroing on as though noth? ing unusual had happier!. THE ceusus returns for Spartanlmrg Coun? ty shows that it bas a, total pnpu'ation of j 21.27:5, being 2646 lesa than in I860 The voting population is 3231 waites an I 1251 blacks; white majority 1377. Sp rtnuburg, our word for it, will keep her skirts eiern! The Negro Candidates for the Supreme Bench. ' After all, Vf. J. Whipper is not to be al? lowed to walk over the course and seat him? self without opposition on thc Appeal Bench. The friends of Wright are working like beavers, and the contest will be sharp and close. And, in truth, the place is worth fighting for, apart from the dignity of Hie thing. The Associate Justice is to be elected for six years, ending in 1S76, and this long lease of the judicial ermine warrants a des? perate struggle. It may happen, however, that the expected division of the colored forces will enable a white man to 3lip into glory. Both Wright and Whipper arc pretty well known in the State, but a word about Hiern may interest "outside barbarians," who know little J the personnel of the South Carolina Legislature. Wright is State seuator from Beaufort. Ile is a Northern negro of some education, and did claim to have been admitted to the bar in a Northern city. He has all the charac? teristics of thc full blooded African, and is now bringingsuit aga! isl thc Richmond and Danville Railroad because he was ejected somewhat unceremoniously from thc ladies' car on tbat road by a very rebellious con? ductor. Whipper, whose star is in the ascendant, is as black as thc ace of spades, but qu\l and unobtrusive in his manner. He was raised in Detroit, and during the war joined a regiment of volunteers. When freedom came in he found himself in Charleston, where he practiced in the provost courts. Subsequently, he practiced law in Beaufort, lie was delegato to thc Constitutional Con? vention of 1S?8, and represents Beaufort in the lower house of thc General Assembly. Whipper is a shrewd and sensible fellow, but a very poor lawyer, although he was em? ployed by the General Assembly to codify tho laws of the State. These are the two candidates. It matters little which wins. K.K.K. , The gentlemen who were arrested in Sum? ter and indicted on the charge of being con? nected with the party of mea who, Inst Oc? tober, made threats against Mr. DuBoseand Mr. Robertson, and afterwards burnt their stores, have all beeu discharged. In the strongest case, in which Mr. Robertson and his employee swore to the identity of three of the party, the accused were acquitted, having proved by the most conclusive and unimpeachable testimony, that Mr. Robert? son and his man were entirely mistaken in their suspicions. ' But the gin-house of Dr. J. B. Witherspoon, three miles from Sumter, was burned on Fri? day, and the gin-house of Mr. T. B. Fraser was burned on the previous night. These are the natural results of Governor Scott's proclamation, which was a plain invitation to the negroes to take the law into their own hands. WK are well aware that Congress, in its own opinion, is omnipotent, and that, ac? cording to the received Radical doctrine, the powers of the majority are limited by their discretion alone. Yet we can scarcely be? lieve that it is seriously proposed by Mr. Bingham to pass a bill_ making it " an of " fence punishable by Gae and imprisonment "for any person to propose to repeal the rat? ification of any proposed amendment to "the constitution." THE Senate displays a wise conservatism in refusing to pass the bills, rushed through the House, for the extension of thc lisaits of Charleston and Columbia. Every taxpayer in both cities has good cause, for once, to thank our Radical Senate. Cost ano ionno. LOST AND FOUND AGAIN.-IF YOU have lost anything, make lt known to the public through this column. We would invite the attention or Planters to the consideration of some of thc advantages In the cultivation or SORGO as a Crop, which are, the small amount ot labor; the hardy character or the plant In Its ability to endure, without ma? terial injury, both drought and wet; Its freedom from the attack or worms; Its early maturing, and the rael that the Seed and every part or the plant ts ol great value. In consequence of Mic lmperrect method hitherto adopted In preparing the Juice or this Cane, lhere has arisen a prejudice, and the belier that Sugar could not be produced, but only a very inferior Syrup. But, by the discovery or the Southern Process, these opinions have been com? pletely reversed in thc minds of all ihose who have examined and tested this Process, as they realize that not only pnre Syrup, superior to the bes: Chemical Syrups ol' the Refineries, is pro? duced, but also Sugar equal to thc liest New Or? leans, in such quantity, as to make it without doubt, the most profitable crop that can be plant? ed, of i hese facts abundant evidence can be shown.
