A KEW GYMNASTIC SENSATION.-The De Lave Troupe, comprising Lila and Zoe, two ex? perienced female gymnasts, together with jug? glers, acrobats pantomimists, Ac, will open on Monday next at the Hibernian Hall. This troupe bas everywhere won the encomiums of the press since its organization, and is now playing to Tull houses in Savannah. She makes two trips every week, leaving Charleston every Monday and Thursday, and Georgetown every Wednesday and Saturday morning at 6 o'clock, commencing this schedule on Monday next, the 17th inst. THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK.-At a meeting of the stockholders of this bank, held yesterday, the following directors were elected : Andrew Simonds, Geo. W. Williams, E. W. Marshall, W. L. Trenholm, D. THE MORTUART REPORT.-The bill ol mortali? ty for the week ending January 6th shows a total of twenty-th > e deaths, ten white and thirteen oolored. Of the whites there were two male and two female infants, and four male and two fc ma.e adults. The list of blacks shows four male and s ve female infants, and one male and three female adults. Sixteen of the deaths were over forty years of age, and two were between eighty And ninety. TUB ANNA.-Weare Informed that the steam yacht Anna, which sailed on Monday, is Intended -to bc a tender to the Bedeal and other Cuban ves? sels which have lately put to sea. It is believed that the Anna put into this port that she might meet the Bedeal, and the wo vessels hope te fall ia with the gunboats off WL'mington. The Bedeal ls a screw steamer running fifteen knots aa hour. Her propeller can be hoisted so that she can run as a sailing vessel without loss or speed. Aboard ?of the Anna were the commander or tte Cuban squadron, the head of the sanitary department, and a bearer of Important dispatches to General C?spedes. A petition from the Plymouth Congregational Church praying that they be permitted to build a woutien chapel near the corner of Pitt and Bull streets. Referred to the Committee on Brick and Wooden Buildings. The petition of J. H. Gadsden and others, of the Niagara" Engine Company, to be allowed to pur? chase their engine from the city, was, on .motion of Alderman Greene, granted. A petition from the residents or Pitt street, be? tween Wentworth and Montague; praying fora street drain, was referred to the Committee on Streets. A communication from L. Bnnch, agent of a patent enamel, was received as information. He was deslrious of using his wash on the railings of the City Park. A communication from the Cluer of Police, ask? ing Tor a public inspection and review or the po? lice at 12 o'clock the next day, was accepted. A petition from the owners of the property de? stroyed by the late fire, asking permission to re? pair the same, was rererred to the Committee on Brick and Wooden Buildings. Alderman Geddings presented sundry bills, .which were passed for payment. Alderman Greene, from the special committee to whom was referred a voluminous document of Alderman Barrow ou the west end improve? ments, moved that the same be referred to the Committee on Streets. Accepted. Alderman Geddings offered a resolution that the petition of Mrs. Della Torre relative to the bridge la Washington street, and the right of .way, be referred to a special committee. This vessel will shortly depart on the survey of tho proposed ship cana! across the Isthmus of Daricn. A DUEL vE.vr. SAVANNAH.-The Savannah Advertiser says thar a party of four gentlemen arrived in that city last Thursday evening, from an interior town on thc line of thc Central Rail? road, not far from Savannah. Friday morning, bright and early, found them across the river on thc Carolina side, where two shots were ex? changed, one of thc principals receiving a severe flesh wound in the shoulder. He wa3 attended by a physician of Savannah, and was able, to? gether with thc entire party, to leave on the night train. The matter was kept wonderfully quiet until all was over. Both gentleman are pretty well known in Savannah. The difficulty origina? ted from a private quarrel. ;ITJP IN A BALLOON."-Savannah can't sup? port the legitimate drama, and the papers there, with a candor that is refreshing, hasten to ac? knowledge the corn. Our Georgia neighbors like thc circus and the minstrels better. Charleston, wc fancy, has risen several pegs beyond the weak? ness for sawdust, spangles and burnt cork, which ls Incident to the earlier stages or civilization. Besides maintaining Shakespeare at the Acad? emy, weare giving a liberal support to a maguifl cent whirligig and to several "museums or living wonders," accompanied by any number ofdolc rul hand-organs. Contrast with this the terrible plight or Savanhah. The News or that city says: It ls reported that Manager John T. Ford is more than satisfied with his experiment in Savan? nah theatricals, and that he will not again visit the city. We don't much wonder-he is not the first good manager that got a sufficiency on his first trip. "Up in a balloon" is generally the managerial tune arter a season in Savannah. THE ACADEMY OF MCSIC-VIRGINIUS.-Mr. Sheridan Knowles has been called thc king of uneducated dramatists in the same sense in which Burns ?tands at the head or uneducated poets, by which is doubtless meant that in his dramatic creed nature ranks superior to art. In tala respect, especially, "Yirginins" 13* a ?cry favorable specimen or his power?. It was first produced at the Covent Garden Theatre in 1820, and was dedicated to Mr. Macready, who ap? peared in the title role, with Mr. C. Kem ble as "Iclllus," and Miss Foote as "Vir? ginia." The play was immediately success. ru!, and has ever since been high in favor with both actors and critics. This popularity It well deserves. Dealing with situations most tre? mendous in their tragic Intensity, there is so much simplicity and pathos blended with its awful passion as almost to justify Hazlitt's bold assertion that "it is the best acting tragedy or thc modern stage." It is "No story piled with clark and cumbrous rate, And words that stagger under their own weight: But one ofslleut grandeur-simply sahl. As though it were awakened from the dead ! It is a tale-made beautiful by years; Of pure old Romau sorrow-old In tears !" The representation or "Virginius'' last evening was one or thc best sustained or thc season. Mr. Warners voice was much clearer than on previous occasions, and the role is one which thoroughly suits his genius. The death scene in the fourth act was the most successful which ha3 yet been enacted; and the whole or the fourth and firth acts were played with an intensity and truth which he has never excelled. On the whole wc are inclined to think his "Virginios" one or his very best Impcrsenatlons. Mr. Fan nm, as "Applus Claudius," though not without an occasional echo or thc "Iago" or the night before, was folly equal to his part; and Mr. O'Nell's "Icilius" was particularly well done. Miss Eldridge's "Virginia" was simple and natural, and singularly free from all staginess. The minor characters of the play were fairly sus? tained, though Mr. Ryan's tragedy is very comic Indeed.
