M. Sat urday morning. The latter did not arrive in the city until nearly It o'clock. The accident was caused by a defective axle, and the terrible weather caused much delay in removing the de bris and clearing ihe track. Pike.?The nlnrin of lire was sounded on Christ mas night, and found lo proceed from the paint and oil store or Mr. David Briggs, on Esst Ray. near Elliott street. When discovered the fire was burning in tlic rear of the store on the south side, and apparently originated on the top of some oil cans. The rafters and celling of the store were much charred and burnt, but the dam age to the stock was caused principally by smoke and water, it was raining fiercely at the lime, and the firemen labored under great disadvantages. An Investigation of tho causa of the lire win be held by the chief to-day. f. State Bonos.?The passage or (he bills to pay the Interest on State Ronds in coin, mid lo compel Insurance companies doing business In this State, 10 deposit$30,000 in these bonds with the Comp? troilcr-Ccneral as security, has caused a rapid np pr?dation In their value. Several or the Insur ance companies, apprehensive of the passage of I ho bin, purchased the requisite amount of bonds til 67 cents, but too Increased demand consequent on iho an ion or the Legislature, na, ?iure ad vanced these securities to S7 cents, and it is confi dently slated that they will soon reach 03. A Runaway?Yesterday about dinner Unie, while a pair of horses at the Rutledge street ter minus of the City Hallway, were awaiting their turn nt the car, they became alarmed at some noise and dashed oil', making for the marsh. One of them ran in and soon became hogged, but was followed by one of the stable employees named Tom lllggins, who endeavored lo extricate the lior % but sank in the mud himself up to ids shoulders. Ropes were procured and both man hud horse soon relieved from their unpleasant position. The conductor of the car spoilt a Sun day suit in his endeavors to lend assistance. Tin: Rooms of the Confeilertile Widows' Home, in llroad street, will be opened to-night, nnd for several nights, at 7 o'clock for the sale of many beautiful and tasteful articles which have been received from abroad. Tlic Immense cake weighing one hundred pounds?which has been contributed by the ladles of Haltlmorc, will be Offered to be voted for for sonic or t lie large chari table Institutions of the City. Some Idea of the magnlif.de or Hie cake may be obtained from the fact (lint Its cir cumference is more than two yards and an eighth. It would atford to each of the three hun dred children or the Orphanhousc u large slice or rich fruit cake. Of the skating rink we have be fore spoken. Tin: Rain Yesterday.?The lowering skies which marked Christmas artcrnnon, had faithful ly fulfilled their promise long before midnight, nnd Sunday dawned upon 11 thoroughly wet city. All day long, with slight Intermissions, the rain poured down. The drain openings became chok ed, and many of the streets were covered with water. The east end of Culhonn street was al' niou: impassable, and the Ion* grounds in differ ent parts of the city were transformed Into minia ture lakes. On Mnellng and oilier streets, tra versed by the city railway, a large portion of the (rack was linder water, and none lint Die amphi bious could attempt to reach ihe cars until they stopped on comparatively dry ground, Por a ruin, the performance of the past two days has been a decided success, but the moisture has been rallier more than the most nrdent believer In hydropa ihy could desire. It has rained, in fact, with "an exceeding great und vehement muchness." Soi'xmxn tiik Alarm.?When the lire broke out in East B ly on Saturday night, the wntchuian at St. Michael's Church promptly sounded the nlarm for Ward Xo. 1. A few minutes -later the Orphnnhouse bell also sounded the alarm, but called Ward No. 4. This was repented for some time, nnd caused both confusion and delay to '.lie Fire Depart nient. Mayor PiltsbUH will, of course, understand Hint it In almost as important to sound the alarm correctly as to sound It at nil, ^nnd so little attention is paid to this mat ter that badly u "re breaks out that there Is not sonic jus complaint of the wilehmcn or police. On Prhuv morning when the lire broke out In Meet Inf street, the policeman on duty saw the Ore, buidui not know what was the number of the wsjd- H Is evident enough that while policemen arr Ignorant of the number of the ward in which 1 y y are on duty, there Is little probability of ijAving 'he alarm given correctly. A similar Igno rance is, we presume, tho cause or tho blunders of tlic steeplenicn. We hope that Maym I'lllsbury will at once glvo his attention to the matter, and not excuse his inaction by saying that this com plaint is caused by opposition to the politics of the Radical policemen. Among the hundreds of testimonials we have from pructlcsl Planters find farmers, wy would call attention to the following extract from a let ter received rrom Colonel II. 0. LOCKKtT, of the large pluming llrm of Jordan A Lockett, dated Alban?, Ca., November27, 1860: "Before closing lids letter, I cannot refrain from expressing my sincere thanks to you for the in ventton of the REST PLOUGH NOW IN CSE. It ts the delight of the negro. Besides doing the best work that 1 have ever seen any Plough do. It runs with more ease to the ploughman, und the draft to the animal is lighter than, any Plough 1 have ever used. * "Your Plough has already become a necessity to me, and I would feel ruined without It. I am satlsllcd we have saved, unnnually, thousands of dollars In mules alone. It Is the Cheapest Plough 1 have ever used, of any kind or description, and I am anxious to bring, if I can, to the notice of my fellow-planters, this most valuable ^lougb." Colonel Lockett commenced using these Ploughs In the spring of 1808, and now has more than two hundred and Ufty (240) of them on bis plantations. We have testimonials as emphatic from lending planters In North Carolina, South CuroUna, Geor gia, Alabama and Texas, but this will suffice for the most Incredulous.
