AcctPKNT ox Tin: South Carolina Raii. noAii asd Detention op Trains.?Tlio train thai left Charleston on Friday evening broke down near the Hovctl-liillC pump, and the engine, ten der and three cars ran off the track, causing a detention of the down trahis dite at 1 A. M. Sat urday morning. The latter did not arrive in the city until nearly It o'clock. The accident was caused by a defective axle, and the terrible weather caused much delay in removing the de bris and clearing ihe track. Pike.?The nlnrin of lire was sounded on Christ mas night, and found lo proceed from the paint and oil store or Mr. David Briggs, on Esst Ray. near Elliott street. When discovered the fire was burning in tlic rear of the store on the south side, and apparently originated on the top of some oil cans. The rafters and celling of the store were much charred and burnt, but the dam age to the stock was caused principally by smoke and water, it was raining fiercely at the lime, and the firemen labored under great disadvantages. Her engines arc of great power, the cylinders' being sixty Inches in diameter and ten fect stroke. The tonnage of the vessel Is 2000 tons, and sho will be capable of car rying 3000 bales of cotton. The cabin on the upper deck will accommodate over one hundred passengers. It has been constructed in hnndsomo atytcby Mr. W. T. Waplcs. Tho South Carolina, the sister ship of tho Tennessee, Is building by Messrs. Harlan, llolllngsworth A Co., Wilming ton, and is also nearly completed. We, though entirely dis agreeing with the Judge In his political notions, do benr testimony of Ids impartial justice, and his great ciforis to do justice to nil. When he came upon our circuit crime was rampant, espe cially larceny?a hog was a curiosity. Now crime Is almost unknown, even stealing ts .be coming rare; riots, lighting, Ac, Is unknown. Who deserves the credit Judge Rutland. Com pare his circuit with that of Judge Orr, Judge Tliomas, or even of Judge Boozer or Judges Plstt and Vernon. how much more peaceful and quiet. Yet he Is complained of because he sup presses crime and strikes terror into tho hearts of evil-doers. Judge the tree by Its fruits is nil our Judge wants.
