In South Carolina there is such a thing aa personal dishonor, apart from physical au (Ter i tig; and what ia felt in tho Carolinas ia felt in Virginia and in every Stitto of tho South. They who had faced the glinting steel and singing bullet, while Mr. Groolcy wroto leodora in safety in Gotham, could meet nnd overcome tho gal? lows. If thoy failed ; if they could bear tho steel and not the rope; if death for tho South was a glory or a shame un it came on tented Held or in prison yard ; these men wcro not soldiers, not Southern men-and Mr. Groeley in heartily welcome to them. A Queer Proceeding. Tho more wc hear of tho handsome Christ? mas gift which our immaculate legislators have voted themselves, in Hie shape of their per diem for tho holidays-in advance-the more modest and consistent appears their action. It seems that tho concurrent resolu? tion for thc advance pnymcnt originated in thc House, and provided Tor an allowance of thc per diem up to January 1. This was sent to the Senate, and so shocked tho virtuous im? pulses of that august body that thc resolu? tion was instantly amended so ns to allow tho drawing of pity only up to December 23 ; and in this form thc measure was sonl back to tho House. A committee of ?conference was asked, and thc House speedily succeeded in convincing the Scnato that it didn't know its own mind. So, iustcad of a compromise between December 23 and January 1, thc committee reported back tho r?solution amended so as to give thc pay, up to January 4-tho form in which it was finally passed.
