In the course ol the ?lay a quarrel arose between two young men, jaamcd respectively William Murrell and James JRamsay. Both these young men were Intoxi . caled. The result or this quarrel was the shoot? ing; on the slightest provocation^ Ramsay by Murrell. The shot took effect in the lungs, and tm Sunday lost thc unfortunate young man expired. He was a son of A. Edgefleld is, and has been, peculiarly, a target for Radical hate and tyranny; affairs, as regards politics and labor, are certainly un? settled, and, worst of all, perhaps, wc have no shadow of municipal government. But not? withstanding all this, Edgefleld Ls extremely far from being the disordered, excited and bloody place one wonld be led to believe from thc ac? counts lately published." Father Hyacinthe. New York is satisfied. Hardly had the Bichardson-McFarland scandal begun to die out, than a new sensation was given it by the French Charitable Society. Father Hyacinthe's objections to publicity on this side of the water, were overruled by his compatriots ; he could not resist their appeal for a lecture in behalf of the poor-a lecture which has been translated with various ap? proximations to accuracy by the Metro? politan dailies. . The eloquent Carmelite was manifestly ut disadvantage. He was suffering from a severe cold which seriously disturbed the music of his sonorous speech. He used a language unknown to a large part of the audience whom curiosity had allured to the Academy of Music. He was not familiar with the operations of the society which he had kindly consented to represent, and hence wasted his strength in philantliropical commonplaces. And, finally, he was erro? neously suspected by some of his over-sharp critics, like the reporter of the Sun for in? stance, as foisting upon the assemblage one of his old conferences, delivered in 1867, be? fore the splendid assemblage of Notre Dame. Yet, even that caustic censor could not refuse li im the tribute of admiration. No doubt Hyacinthe has neither the scope, nor the passion of Lacorduire. But he is a bril? liant orator notwithstanding. If he deals in commonplaces, he has the art of clothing them with the air of novelty. He has a magnetic power over an audience, as Pres sense, the most distinguished Protestant preacher in France, testifies. His firm per? son, noble gestures, rapid, impassioned de? livery aud poetic style, explain the influence which his liberal and semi-political dis? courses have exerted over tho Parisian mind. Add to thia "the heart" of which he discoursed so eloquently in New York, and rou have Michelet's Gaul, civilized-a speaker, a man broad not deep, a whole-soul ?d creature, possessed by the influences? of tris age, and able to reproduce them better :ban Lamennais and Montalemhert, but with jut the power to analyze or explain. When we consider the New York lecture, md those more famous lectures of 18G7, ;which we beg the New York Sun to read igain) wo can form a tolerably accurate dea of the man. He is by no means a Luther. He is the precise opposite of a galvin-greatest of the logical reformers. 3e is a sort of catholic Beecher, who en ieavors to reconcile, in a vaguely philo? sophie way, the conclusions of the past, and he'aspirations of the present He is a pu :)il of Lamennais, who yet refuses to break with the church; who has his own way of .cconciling democracy in politics with abso utisra in religion. No one who has ever looked upon thc ?eavy-jawed, placid, beaming countenance )f Father Hyacinthe will confound him with lie martyrs of old. Ho advocates liberty of ,he press, liberty of conscience, liberty of vorship; he opposes personal government ind thc union o' Church and State in all Eu? rope, except iu Rome; he makes marriage a loty to God and society, except to the priest iood; he makes the Pope supreme except 1 n thc Syllabus of 186L and except in irs control of Father Hyacinthe; ina word, ie seeks to reconcile the nineteenth century md the middle ag?s. The jongregated bishops of Catholicity will have jo deal with Gallicanism and with Femin? ism, with High Churchmen and with Bap lists-the extremes of the ecclesiastical scale. In the Senate on Thursday the Abbeville contested election case was taken up, and Senator Corbin moved that the election be declared null ami void, and that neither contestant be admitted to a 3eat. This brought about au animated debate, in the course of which : 1. Senator Montgomery (Republican) said that Congress had admitted Judge H?ge (Radical) to a seat "to which he was elect "ed by a majority of titree thousand votes "against him." The proper Congressional Committee will please read and make note of. 2. Senator Maxwell (negro Radical) said that "if it cost $200,000 no more lives must, "be lost at elections in Abbeville.'1 Uthc people, he said, dare attempt another act (what act ?) like that at Abbeville, "it "will not stop with the sacrifice of one or "two lives." 3. Senator Hayne (Radical) said that they used to have murders and outrages upon the people in his county, but "since it "was understood by the Democrats that, "for every man killed by them, two or three "of them would die, the elections passed off "quietly." He said that "he had smelt "powder before, and was willing to smell it "again." 4. The same sample senator said further : "Don't you see that the State can do with "the people of Abbeville as the United States "did with thc Southern States-whip them "into a !" These word3, together with the incendiary speeches of the South Carolina Congress? men, and the bloody threats of stray memb? ers of the House, and the proclamations of Governor Scott, point out the true temper of the Radical State officials. They want a light-provided always that they can pit fifty constables and militiamen against one white citizen. Dalmatia. The Dalmatian trouble ?3 not settled. The insurgents are still in arms, and Austria will need more troops to compel obedience to her authority. So far the sacrifice of life on the part of the Austrians has been out of all proportion to the injury done the rebels. The number ofmen invalided already among the troops, from the character of the war? fare, and the terrible privations of cold and hunger to which they are exposed, exceeds all belief, and every return vessel to Trieste is crowded with sick and wounded to an ex teut out o' all proportion willi Hie apparent magnitude of the struggle. Thc district (J tho Zappa, which so lately had given iii its submission to the Imperial Government, is again in arms, and many of the inhabitants have been found among the killed in thc last engagements. This has induced Austria to prefer n request to the Great Powers for per? mission to cross Turkish territory with troops, and thus reach thc heart of the in? fected districts. Thi3 will be opposed by Prussia, who is in truth the backer of Dal? matia and the principal fomentor of the ex? isting difficulties. Dalmatia was ceded to Austria by the allies ia 1814, in order that she might reach and dominate the Adriatic. Venetia is lost, and now the foes of the House of Hapsburg desire to shut ofl* Austria altogether from an Adriatic port. Prince Charles of Ron mania, is a nephew of the King of Prussia, and aspires to authority in tiie Danubian provinces. The Prince of Montenegro pro? tests against the occupation of bis territory by Austrian troops, and does all in bis power, without open action, to make common cause with the Dalmatians. For a number of yours tiie Montenegrins have sought for a port on the Adriatic, but the demand has always been resisted by Austria, who is well aware what use would be made by Russia of even thc smallest foothold. Tho interests of Roumania, Montenegro and Prussia are opposed to thc success of Austria; but France and Russia may not be willing to give to Prussian ambition a still broader tield. Napoleon has bis hands full at borne. Tito Czar can afford to wait. Be? sides, it is not the policy of Russia to strengthen the hands of Prussia at this time. From France the Czar has nothing to fear: from Prussia be bas much. It is, therefore, the policy of Russia to side with France and uphold Austria in this Dalmatian embroglio. A few days will probably give us ? better knowledge of the situation, and enable a i shrewd guess to be made at the upshot of the afiair._ Tile Franking Aba.:-.
