The ProUttlre Stevedore-' Association. TO the Shipping Merchants, Stevedores, Long? shoremen, rnd ail persons interested in the prosperil'y and welfare of the Commerce of \ our City: We, the members of Union Protective Steve? dore's Association, do hereby beg leave to address ourselves. We deem it necessary to revert in this connec? tion to the history and conduct of the Union Long? shoremen's Society of this city, and to their en? deavor to antagonize labor and capital. Of this movement we heartily disapprove We recog? nize and assert the importance of unity and har? mony between labor and capital, and to this end devote our endeavors. As we wonld oppose a party of laborers who tried to array themselves against the capitalists, so we would equally and as earnestly oppose the capitalist who would try to exert the influence of capital against the in? terest of the workingman. That there Ls any ne? cessity that either of these dilemmas should arise or exist, we do not admit. That they have occur? red, no one can deny. That the Longshoremen's Society have refused to work for certain parties for the most absurd {and in some case for politi? cal) reasons, ta also a well known fact. That they endeavored by threats and violence to prevent men from working except they belonged to their creed and recognized their right to dictate to them, when, how and for whom they should work, cannot bc disputed. We do not propose, nor do we desire,to dictate to the Longshoremen's Society. If they do not already see the fallacy and impolicy of their unjust conduct in putting and keeping tho commerce of tho city In a con fused and unsettled condition, they will in a short time discover that they have killed the goose that laid the golden egg. They will soon find that j their policy, if persisted In, and not defeated, will cause shipowners and masters to seek other ports j for engagements for their vessels, and cause fae- j tors and shippers to find other markets for their produce. To the shipmasters, agents and ship? pers we would respectfully state that we are now in an organized condition, ready, willing and able to perform- all the duties of stevedores. .financial. g IG HT CHECKS on Messrs.
