Another Little Gam-. The message of Governor Scott is a won derful production. It contains Eomelhin to suit thc taste of every lamb in the fold The Radical property-holder is baited with promises of lower taxation; the hungry office-seeker is pacified by the recommenda tion that more fat sinecures be evsated; tho dissatisfied freedman is biddon to wait a lit? tle while, and a labor convention will double his wages and make lifo pleasant forever. There ?3 a smattering of all manner of knowledge, and a peeping out of all kinds of ignorance. The capacious Governor who gravely tell3 tho negroes that the Emperor Severas was "a colored freedman," may wei look forward to a time when shad shall be sold in the Columbia market "at twenty for "iv dollar," and, by dint of purchasing coin to pay the interest on the State debt, tho gold premium in New York 3hall obediently come down "to par." Now sneering at thc "aspiring young men" of the Sontti, the hatchets of whoso shoes this persou from Ohio is not worthy to unloose; now expoun? ding the doctrine of mild protection in "ox "empting from taxation for live years" all capital invested in manufactures; now de? claring that the juries of thc State are not Radical enough, and that justice ia corrupt? ed "at the fountaiu head" by Anti-Radical jurors; now confessing frankly that many of the prisoners confined for horrible crimes were pardoned "to preserve their civil "rights," which allows them to vote for the Radical party; now praising the Hubbard constabulary and denouncing thc prcas of the State; now prattling of the spawn of systers, and what should b8 tho product of in acre of land-Governor Scott has still an lye to business. And we do not hesitate to tay that ho and his friends, in all this pretty ialk about the soundness and prosperity of .he State, havo no other object in view than motlier successful speculation in South Car? ina bonds. Tho lick and a promisa which he negroes roceive is thrown in for political iSfecL 'What Govornor Scott is driving at s an appreciation of the price of State bonds, o that he may bo ablo to dispose advan ageou3ly of his ill-gotten gains and b'ne pith more feathers his already luxurious lest. This, we admit, is apparently a som o rbat unkind view to take of the motives and lesires of the virtuous R. EL Scott; but it is orne out and sustained by a long array of acontrovertible facta. Very much to the grief and mortification ? "His Excellsncy" and thc cherubic Kimp on, South Carolina seourities drooped la tie New York market; noi could the puning f interested journalists prevent them from liding down toward the lowest depth of nancial insecurity. The shrewd brokers f Gotham, informed by their agenU of the rue condition of afiairs, made up their linds that South Carolina bonds were un aie and precarious so long as a band of eggars on horseback were riding tho State > ruin. Threats of now subsidies, of more Hue Ridge rings, of more offices, of now xtravagancc, reached their open oars, and lr. Kimpton found himself unable to stem tic current of doubt and hesitation. To make out his case, Governor Scott ithlcis?ly pitches overboard tho Blue liidge ailroad, which a little while ago was the a ly thing that could save and redeem thc tate. The people are promised lo wer taxej, {jinking fund is recommended, and as a latter of justice to the creditor, it is urged lat the interest on thc debt in future be lid in coin. It is proposed to go into the arket and buy gold with which to pay the terest on the debt. And this move, which ould at once increase by twniy-five per -nt. tho money paid for interest, which ould add one-fourth to that class of taxa on, will, wo are told, be a great ?tcp to ard thc resarnption of specie payments and i?ist "ih>i able Secretary of the Troasnry" hringtng gold to par. We are grieved that our venerable- neigh? bor, The (hurter, is not disposed to accept in good part our friendly vindication of its unwonted enterprise. To announce an event as having occurred ou Tuesday, which did not happen until Wednesday, was in truth so extraordinary an instance of wake? fulness on the part of Tte Courier, that we should havo been unneighborly, as wei! faithless to our mission as chroniclers of passing events, had v.-e selfishly withheld notico and commendation of tho fact And, remembering that irritability, like feeble ness and dotage, too often accompanies extreme old age, we can pardon a lit? tle ill temper in a journal which points to a past of "nearly four score years." T'As Courier, however, takes comfort frcm thc reilection that in its life-time it has seen many journals "like THE NHWS" spring up, flourish for a season and then sink, ouc by one, into untimely graves. This is not the ilrst time that our contemporary has volunteered this cheerful suggestion, which it seems to regard as at once the unanswerable assertion of ita own immor? tality, and the coup de grace lo vigorous and youthful rivalry. We hasten to relieve tho apprehensions of Thc Courier in our behalf. Tua NKWS, it is true, has not boen so long in tho world of journalism as to have outlived its usefulness; bnt wo are happy te Bay that it ls a plump, lively and premising infant, daily gathering health and strength, and with no thought of tilling a email sized coffin, even te gratify the hopes and verify the predictions of a super? annuated neighbor. And if, indeed, "the class of journalism" of which THB NBWS has been the pioneer, is as "distasteful to the community" as The Courier would have us believe, then tho community, we most say, has taken a very unu?nal method of indicating its sentiment?. With a circu? lation in city and country far exceeding that which The Courier ever enjoyed, even in its beet days, and with subscriptions pouring in, in constantly increasing volume, thisnewspapor must be pardoned if it hesi? tates to accept the dicta of even so proper ?1 journal a? The Courier, In regard te the taste and tho wants of tho public. Wa are glad to learn that the Charles ioniana in regard te whom a slanderous re? port has been published by a New York ?aper intend to appeal to the courts for ro Jress. In their determination te sift he matter to tho bot tem, the Injurod parties tavo our full sympathy and best wishes. Tira fracas at Abbovillo Courthouse, da cribod in TUB NKWS of yesterday, was a crious affair. Congressman nogo stirred ip thc negroes, until they dragged from ia bug^y and searched a Mr. Cochran, rho had boen guilty of the crime of speak jg of tho freedmen as ''negro fellows." ir. Cochran was arrested by armed ne ;roes, and kept in prison until night, when 0 was bailed out. The arrest of Mr. Coch? in was made without warrant, and no barges have beon brought against him. ind this flagrant violation of thc rights of f the citizen is applauded, rather than con emned, by the officials in Columbia.
