A correspondent of the San Francisco Hulle tln, writing from the Sandwich Islands, says: After a few days of very quiet lift? in Hulalii, I began to look with no littlp curiosity towards a low peninsula to the westward on thenoith coast of Molokai. It i i Iho home of the lepers. A swift and fortunately smooth sail under the shadow of stupendouscllds, that make beauti ful and terrible this side of lite island, brought one safely to the shore; there, watching Ils chance, the cnnoti plunged In upon the beach over the breakers that render rondins In this neighborhood very unsafe and often impossi ble. The peninsula, perhaps three miles broad, spreading a couple <>t miles into the sea, Is so completely Isolated that you could hardly Imagine a nuire appropriate ami secure retreat for lite poor victims of leprosy. A rough sen breaks continually upon a wild forbidding coast. At the back un almost per pendicular wall towers to the height of throe thousand feet. There is but one avenue of approach by land?a narrow zigzag trail cut in the face of this wall, dropping painfully into the plain, below, no doubt tilling the breast of tue unhappy toper, who Is conduct ed hither by an oflicor, with sickness and hor ror as he feels that now indeed he Is banished out of the world and forgotten of moil. Yet this very banishment is to htm a gond fur tune?perhaps the best lii.it could befall him. At his home, If lie Imra any worthy of the name, he Is morn or less regarded with sus picion, or treated wllh reserve. They build and repair houses, nil end to the gardens, and are generally useful, making tbpjr own living and serving the lepers bo sldes. I believe the poem is a failure because of its hideous conceit. There arc a dozen eases of like nature in this valley of death. Though .equally Incompre hensible, thoy aro nevertheless true. One poor unfortunate, at least forty years old, and ro putBlvo as a oobrn, Is fairly worshipped by a well knit youth of two-and-twenty, who for eakoB the world and lu temptations (which Is saying much for a Kanaka) and cleaves to his Medusa. I think Swlnburno should bo acquit ted of the charge of morbid exaggeration upon this evidence, .which I will swear to. A more singular fact is. that a man and his wife . may llvo together for half a dozen years, one being leprous while the other Is undoflled. -It Is the custom in the re ligious asylums 1n tlio Levant, when a leper is presented, to administer tho sacrament of extreme unction, and to perform a certain ceremonial of burial by proxy. A(tor that the leper Is considered us ono dead, nnd conse quently no longer accountable for his mis deeds. This Is perhaps a questionable severity slnco, In some countries, leprosy Is not cou sldored nocossnrlly fatal. Agnsslz, In his "Journey In Brazil," pp.. 305-0, mentions two asylums no visited there, whero cerlnln cnsoH ; had been cured, and It wns believed that with ta proper medical uciimcn, the disease would . gradually decrease. Moreover, the leprosy of Brazil and China Is of a more malignant typo than that of Hawaii. The order was almost perfect during my sluy, and I give the entire credit to the persuasive Christian discipline of Mr. and Mrs. Walsh.
