Then a very handsome lady In his wife's household became tho recipient of tho Prince's aUentlonSf- which soon became sa fla? grant as to excito tho talk of all London. Thc Bcandal finally came to thc ears of tho Queen, who caused thc olTcndcr to bo banished. But this did not break up thc Intimacy, which con? tinued until a fresh lover had made the royal companionship undesirable. Thc Prince then took to visiting actresses, and to spend? ing money upon 'them, and where he hod formerly one ho hos now three or four lady acquaintances. The favorite was a noted French actress, Mlle. Schneider, the original "Grande Duchosse," who numbered others' besides his Royal' Highness In her sidto, and bled the purees of them all. Among her trophies, she secured a note of band for j ?60,000, signed by tho Prince, and sent lt to England to be paid. Bo matters go on. Correspondents say that the effect of his Royal Highness' ex? ample is having a very Injurious effect upon the monds of thc country, and that a radical change ls taking place. TUt Happy Family. The Radical brethren in South Carolina And it dilllcult to dwell together In unity; and tho Intent enmity between tho native negro and the white, and colored adventurers, at tliia late day, makes itself faintly beard. For two g?ears the free dm on, who have the voting majority in the State, have allowed themselves to be used and abused by a hand? ful of knaves who aro far lesa worthy of re? gard than an honest and Industrious negro. Tho colored people have gained no new right . They have obtained no new privi? lege. Nor land nor mule has come to them. Not one promise made them by tho chief? tains of their party has been or will be kept. And yet they have voted at all times, und upon all occasions, with the precision and regularity of clock-work. All the barron honor of votlnc baa been theirs.; but nois for them, one atom of substantial profit. They did os the* were bid. Officials were mudo by tho bagful. Ex-bummers, worn out New Englanders, and disreputable West? ern wire-pullers have beon given the oppor? tunity of growing rapidly rich. Million after million hus been added to the load of public debt. Thu property-holders of the State are taxed to tho tune of two million dollar? in I niuo months or less. But the negro masses have no pickings, no plunder, no pince. And tiicy have not. bad aa much true pro? tection for themselves and their families, or j ns much encouragement In their industry, ns a respectable whit? government would undoubtedly have given them. And why? |, The interests of tho resident white man and the resident negro are, for the most-part, one and the same. The white' mon, the property-holders and mechanics, would havo striven totnereaso tho prosperity of tho State, I?arid' by avoiding all- unnecessary expense, 'would havo decreased the rate of taxation. Money now Btowed away in the carpet-bag of | the political adventurer would have been spent lu cultivating land, f n buildingnillls and factories, in completing railroads, and in the I erection of storehousesT. and dwellings. Of every dollar that was spent the laborer would have had bia sh aro. Aa.it is, the whito propel Ly-h older ls taxed to death, and the artisan and mechanic lind no sufficient'em? ployment. But, ali th? while, the carpet? bagger feeds ot the public crib, and grows 'Heb by thc sweat of the people. The colored people may find, in their tat? tered gariiieiito, their dilapidated homes, their ill-clad wives and children, and their aching bones, arguments against carpet-bag rule which cannot be. overcome. They, are probably as enamored as over of Radicalism fbythe abstract; but they do not love os dear? ly 03 ot Old tho BO alu wag and carpet-bagger. | Thia is'shown by their conduct In George-' f town and Kcrabaw, upou tbe occasion of J making nomi nations of candidates for the elections which take place to-morrow. . In Georgetown, the nogroea, who are about five times as numerous os th?'whites, de? manded that they be, represented in tho Leg? islature by a respectable mau of their own color. This did not suit the policy of Ibo carpet-bag politicians. By a judicious ap? plication, of sort words, and what Mr. Par? ker. Pillsbury calls "rod-bot wbUkoy," tho convention was cozened into nominating a New .England negro of doubtful untece- j dents. Tho freedmen felt that they bad been fooled once more, and resolved to put up a decent man' of color, there being no dan? ger that even a division of the Radical vote would enable the whites to elect un Aptl Radical candidate. And1 what next f The. .whole carpet-bag froterAlty begin to revile j and implore. They call upon tim people of Georgetown to do their duty. And what ls "?heir duty?'' To elect the carpel bagger anti tum the nativo freedman adrift I 'They are told that If Uley do not they will be traitors to the whole Radical league. Mark Ul These Georgetown freedmen, who havo voted unmurmuring!}-, at election after election, for tho pets of tho carpet-bug und scalawag oill ci als, nrc told that they must vote to or? der, as usual, or be forever infamous. OP I coarse, if tho Georgetown freedmen Uko to plcy tills gamo of "Black I win ', white you "lose," wc have nothing to say. ? In Kershaw, before tho nomination, an at? tempt was made to do the same thing. A butch of officials from Columbia exerted themselves' to secure tho selection of ono pf their Own ring-it. would have' bpon one more vote for those railroad subsidies. But the colored peoplo solzod the reins and put up a colored man. . It would have boon safer, perhaps, if the cobbler candidato had stuck to bis last; but bo li moro the. repre? sentative Of tho colored peoplo than a skulking white bond-bunter and per-diem seeker ia ever likely to be, 1 Tbe Kershaw and i Georgetown straws show which way the wind U blowing. . As a general thing, it makes little difference to the white people which, of tbe Radical wings la successful. But when the1 contest\Ui, be- .1 tween; a, white carpet-bagger OD an Imported* negro and a'rr^pectablo native freodninh, WQ cannothelp hoping Unty the freedman may win.' i V '.' . /.' ? ruo '.i < .?u.?s.-r< . . ?lr Jania?. It is said that tho Hon. Edward Thistle ton, an English gentleman, has discovered beyond doubt the real author of thc fumous letters of Junios. Mr. ThLsUcton called to his assistance Mr. diaries Cabot, un export in hand-writing, and expects to prove incon? testably that thu letters of Junina to rila pub? lisher, Mr. Woodfull, were writteoby Mr. Geo. Grenville, the reputed uuthor of the Ameri? can Stamp act. Facsimiles of the ackuowl e lgcd letters of Mr. Grenville, and of the letters of Junlus, will shortly lie mado pub? lic. Mr. Grenville was n brother of Richard Grenville, afterward Euri Templo, and serv? ed in Parliament from 1741 until his death in 1770. In 1763 he became Primo Minis? ter, and was always regarded as tho ablest man of business then lu the House of Com? mons. Tho letters of Junlus have boen attribu? ted to Earl Temple, Edmund Burke, "Sin-1 "gie Speech" Hamilton, Lord Ashburton and John Wilkes; but the weight of evi? dence is, so far, in favor of Sir Philip Fran? cis, who is generally considered to have been the author. Of the nature of the state? ments to bo published by Mr. TbiBtleton we hove no more thun an inkling; but lt is c?r? tala that only the clearest and most conclu I sive testimony will change-and even then not without great difficulty-the act current1 of popular opinion. The critics and sarans may be convinced, but it will bo long before the public mind will regard any other thau Sir Philip Francis as him who wrote "I am "the depositary of ray own secret, and it "shall perish with me." TO-MORROW elections will be held in the counties of Abbeville, Georgetown, Ker? shaw and Sumter, to fill vacancies in the State Legislature. The whites generally take very little interest in these elections, and it ?B likely that tho Radical candidates will be elected all round. In Abbeville there ls an opposition ticket, but tho people are more interested lu the county fair than in State pol?tica. THE carpet-baggers aro again in a peck of trouble On Friday Elliott, a Massachu? setts colored man, cowhided Kavanagh, a white Northern adventurer, nnd yesterday Wlmbush, a native mulatto, gave a beating to Leslie, the Yankee Land Commissioner. The eyes of tho colored people are opening at loot. . . Reviews. lu SU.K ATTIRE. A Novel. By William Black Author of "Love or Marriage ?" Now York Harper A Bros. Charleston : John Bussell When among "tho mob of gentlemen who "write with ease" there arises an author who has really something to say for himself, whose utterances are thc result of actual individual reflection upon thc problems of Ufo and deall which lie around Mm, and whose book, there fore, ls real among the moss of unrealities which are called books, and deflnitfi in its ear? nestness among the superficial sensationalism of tho age, he is certainly entitled to the grnt itudo of both reader and critic-even though neither should entirely ay ree with idm in the peculiar views which : make his originality. Such a writer is Mr. Black, and such a book "lu Silk Attire" may certainly claim to be. In verbal ? cleverness. In felicitous Illustra? tion, in unusual descriptive power, and espeel ally in a certain bold and fearless grappling with difficult nre.lnl pt i dilema, tho book boars mint-mark of Its o wu. It ls - essentially Bohe mian and rationalistic (a not uncommon com blunt lon,) In its point or view, and these quat tttes give lt a freshness and vigor altogether unlike the stereotyped, tone of tho modern novel. It ls true that this boldness sometimes begets a certain unscrupulousness of thought aud speech, which ls not always quito co ni pat? udo with good taste; but on tho whole the ex? change ls a fair one. The heroine or "In Silk Attire" ia an actress, and tho dominant idea ot the book (though there aro several subordinate ones,) U the? necessary impersonality ol true art-the Im possibility of a complote and perfect reallz-v tlon and reproduction of a Act Ul bus life when once thc true Individual life hos been called Into bel?g In tho.poul. Thu author's view on this poiut ls well Illustrated und enforced In the development of the story, nud in thc course of which,, ai we havo hinted, thora aro many other fruitful suggestions which would bear moro elaborate presentation. The .characters are well defined and sus? tained, and both the heroines aro too J nen and not toy-figures, a somewhat unusual circum? stance. Indeed, Hove. Anerley has reality snough about her to bc romeinhored long after tho book ls laid asido, and it is not often that i critic can say that. Notices in Bankrupt!ti.
