It is proposed to foroe air rapidly through a coil or series of iron pipes heated in a furnace, and then through a g.eiter length of pipe outside, made of fire-clay, which is dalmo 1 to be about the best non-conductor that can be had. The Payment of the State Taxes. An official circular from Mr. Real) Tomlinson, the State Auditor, extending t time for the collection of State taxes to t 15th ol October will be published on F rid next. This relief will be welcome to all ola? of our taxpaying people, and especially those who are unable, whatever their w llngness, to pay their taxes until the ba ness season is fairly began, and an opp< tunity has been given them of sending th orops to market. It is understood that for the year endi September 1, 1869, thero will be no new i sessment of real property, whioh will taxed aooording to the valuation complet some months ago. The injustice and ii quality of the assessment, manipulated it was by the State Board of Bqaaliiatic has already been exposed in the oolam of every anti-Radical paper in the Sta Whether we be willing or unwilling, tax lion upon this basis must be borne for o year more, and our people who have not y O mpleted the payment of their taxes 1 the year ending September 1, 1868, will called on to pay by Maroh next the Sta taxes for the year ending September 1869. In this way two millions of dolla for State taxes alone will have to be pa by our people in less than nine month Many persons oannot meet these demam apon them. Some time ago it waa shown in th paper that, aeoording to the apparent letti of the tax law, the payment of the Sta1 taxes for 1868 ooald not be enforced un. March, 1870 This point is well put by ot contemporary, the Courier, in a recent art ole; but we oannot advise the taxpayers the State to endeavor to postpone, by lit gttion, the fulfilment of their tax obligi tiona. The GoM Gambling on Black friday An Assooiated Press telegram, pubKshei this morning, contains the rather atartlinj news that the Bank of New York has con sented to aet as the Clearing House for th gold transactions of Blaok Friday on thi basis of 185 for gold. This, if true, cai only mean that the gold inflation of Fridaj last is very properly regarded as a sheei swindle, and that an arbitrary rate hat been fixed at whioh a settlement mast bi made of all the transactions of the day. Ii is evident that only a little l?gitim?t! business was transacted. While one bold boll was yelling for gold at 150, others, more bold, were offering 155 and 160. There was no more regularity in the quota? tions than there is in the fall of a die; and while the ring were offering to bay mil? lions at twenty and, thirty per oent. more than its actual value, they who had small pare?is ot the coin to sell found it difficult to obtain a purchaser The whole op er? tion waa an attempt to gamble on a hogs scale at the cost of the trade and commerce of the country. The gold gamblers did moro than risk their own fortunes. By their unscrupulous manoeuvring they de? ranged our whole mercantile system; and until the balaiee has been struck, mad the wreok bleared away, it will be difficult to effect the simplest mer oantile transaction. Foreign exchange hal been unsaleable for some days, and the Gold Board may rely on having the hearty support of the mercantile community in any measures which m ty be necessary to mark their reprobation of one of the grandest frauds of the age.
