George W. Williams & Co., morchants of our city, we yesterday noticed somo rioh spooimens of tbo cotton plant, which wore striking for their prolific character and luxuriant growth. They were raided by Mr. John S. Maokroll, of Black stock, Fairfiold County, 8. O. and the plante shown were grown on sindy soil, aud bad on thorn about 350 bolls each ? thoso cultivated on rich soil being still moro prolific. It is understood that two of the Aldermen who, on Tuesday last, spoke upon the question of employing an engineer and a stenographer for tbe City Euginoer Investigating Commit tee, deom thoir remarks of enough importance to be be published in tbo official proceedings. G. Mackey be removed from offioe. The fines imposed by tbe Mayor yesterday amounted to five dollars. Suspicious Cl qcjmstano B9.?Yesterday a colored man from E dis to Island went to Magis trate Mackey and stated that about the last of August his father went fishing with- another colored man who.bad been heard to threaten his life. They did not return for several days and a search waB mado for thorn, and the body of the old man was found floating in th? water. It was behoved tbat he had met with foul play from' his companion, and a magistrato was re quested to hold an inquest, but refused to do so unless ho was paid six dollars. The colored men not having that amount, buried the body without having an inqaeat held. Tbe colored man wantod to know from Magistrate Maokoy what steps ho should lake to prosecute the man ho supposed had committed tbo murder. The magistrate gave him the neceaeary in~ formation, bat staled that he could do nothing for him, tbe alleged crime having been com mitted oat of his jurisdiction. ' Horn. Tho demand was again refused by tbo Chtof, and tho Mayor informed he would bo waited on the next day, which he was by the Chief and tho chairman and vico of the board. A very friendly intervie >v was held; tho Mayor agreeing that what had boon done was correct, and requesting that bis communication should bo laid before tho board at its first meeting as official. This was dono, and the board passed a resolution requiring the Ohiof and clork to delivor over to the Mayor and Council all the engines, hose reels, hoso and other articles held by thorn rotating to tho city engines. This was accordingly dono by tbo Chief and clork, and no fault was fouod by the Mayor.
