THIS POLICE RIFLES, one hundred and twenty-five in number, are a portion of the last batch of thirty thousand the Governor has re? ceived to arm the militia with, and tho pre? sence of which has caused him te expand bis chest, look around in all directions to see if any K. A MARRIED MAN RUNS AWAY FROM HIS WIFE AND FIVE CHILDREN, AND TAKES A MARRIED WOMAN WITH HIM.-Patrick Mniphy, who for some time past has kept a sailor's boarding boase on Queen-street, was missed early yes? terday morning by bis loviog wife and five in? teresting ohlldren. They commenced a search for him, whioh was fruitless, but they found that a young woman, whom he had persuaded his wife to employ, was also missing. Besides, the loving wifo, in her search, observed that a look on one of her trunks had been out out with a chisel. From this trunk two hundred and fifty dollars in gold and a quantity of clothing had boen taken. The woman with whom Murphy fled is about twenty years of age, good looking, and has a husband in Milwaukee, Michigan, who has been sending her money regularly. Murphy was quite devoted to his wife and children up to the time of his departure, and for several hours after his flight they could not be brought to believe that they had been so heartlessly abandoned. A NEGRO WHO HAS BEEN IN THE PENITEN? TIARY FSB ATTEMPIINO TO RlLL HIS MOTHER ATTEMPTS TO RILL HIS BROTHER.-Yesterday morning a colored man named Jefferson Wil? liams appeared before Justice Mackey, and re? quested to have hi-? brother, Thomas Williams, arrested, stating that he was then lying in wait f jr him, with all of his pockets filled with rocks. Justice Mackey issued a peace warrant and sent his constable, John Vanderpool, colored, to arrest Thomas Williams. When Vanderpool banded the warrant to Williams, ho commenc? ed cursing the officer and tbe magistrate, and then took a stone out of his pocket and struck Vanderpool on the side of the bead, partially stunning him. Before Vanderpool recovered from this blow, Wilhams Beized bis dub and struck bim over the hand, shattering the knuckle bones. Officer Geo. Simmons, colored, then came up and arrested Williams. When before the magistrate Wil? liams cursed him. and treated him and the officers present with the utmost contempt. He said that he intended to kill his brother, and had been lying in wait for bim since six o'clock the night before; that he would kill him as soon as he was released. He was com? mitted to jail. Williams has partially served a term in the penitentiary for assaulting his motlier with intent to kill. He was pardoned out a short time previous to the expiration of his sentence. ? ? _ AN AFFECTIONATE WIFE-SHE THINKS ANO? THER MAN TOO HANDSOME TO BE HEB HUS? BAND.-While we believe in the assertion of tho smock-frocked philosopher, who compared wife beating to threshing a sack of flour, say? ing, ''You may knock all the fine ont of it, but 'pend 'pon it the coarse will stop behind," yet there is no fine to be knocke i out o? some wo? men, for they are all coarse, and we don't know what a "poor married man is to do" with a woman of this kind for a wife, unless he ab? atte mpts to train her in the way she should go. But we are wandering. We commenced this paragraph with the intention of giving an account of Mrs. Catherine Hoffman, who is all coarse, and has the devU in her. She was arraigned before the Mayor yester? day to answer the charge of being drunk and disorderly, threatening to fire a pistol at a man, and also to fire ber house on Woolt street. She (with a bewitching smile, intended for tbe Mayor, who, however, having a ''Copper? head in bis bosom, stinging him to death," didn't appreciate it) stated that a lady called upon her early Tuesday morning, and she took a drink with ber and her old man. This drink made her feel very pleasant, and she asked her "old man" to give her some money togo to market with; but he would not do it, and she took his toole into the yard and burnt tbem. A young man of fair attractiveness appeared aa witness against Catherine, and stated her misdeeds, showing conclusively that she was .bough to try any man's temper. The Mayor, upon whom,tb0 bewitching smile of Catherine must h&ve bad a confusing effect, asked her if the witness was ber husband, to whioh she quickly replied, "Oh, no, your honor, he's too handsome a man for that." Tbe Mayor sentenced her to twenty days* imprisonment, whioh sentence abe quietly ac? cepted, only remarking to the said witness as a policeman led her out, "Now, pay that fine, dear, won't you, now." j CRUMBS, -it is reported that a wife and her ohlldren received quite a surprise yesterday from her husband. Fifteen years ago he very suddenly and mysteriously disappeared, and carno home yesterday. The scavengers, wo learn, bave been throw? ing effdi into s. 1st near tbe corner of East Bay and Queen streets, making the plaee very attractive, only to the buzzards, which usually frequent the market place. Sally Gilllard, colored damsel from Columbia, was arrested yesterday, lor stealing mousy from Venus Warley, colored, and was commit, tod to jail by Justice Mackey. The city sheriff ts preparing a fiat of unpaid tax executions lu his office, to be advertised next sales-day, including all delloapeatt who have not paid their first and second instal? ment of this year's taxes. We advise those who have not paid to go up at once and do so. Hal Alder nan Geddings tbe power to pre? vent children, from playing in the City Hall square ? It is asserted that Congressman C. G. Bowen went to Columbia yesterday morning, and in tbe afternoon Dr. Mackey arrived from tbere.
