Besides, the loving wife, in lier search, observed that a lock on one of her trunks had been cut out with a chisel. From this trunk tero hundred and fifry dollars in gold and a quantity of clothing had been taken. The woman with whom Murphy fled is about twenty years of ag?, good looking, and has a husband in Milwaukee, Michigan, who has been lending ber money regularly. Murphy wa? quite devoted to his wife and children up to the time of his departure, and for several hours after his flight they could not be brought to believe that they had been so heartlessly abandoned. A NEGRO WHO HAS BEEN IN THE PENITEN TIA Ri' FSB ATTEMPIINO TO KlLL HIS M OTHER AITE?TPT8 TO KILL HIS BROTHER.-Yesterday morning a colored man named Jefferson Wil? liams appeared before Justice Mackey, acd re? quested to have hi* brother, Thomas Williams, an esl ed, stating that he was then ? lying in wait ? >r him, with all of his pockets filled with rocks. Just ito Mackey issued a peace warrant and sent his constable, John Yanderpool, colored, to arrest Thomas Williams. When Yanderpool banded the warrant to Williams, bo commenc? ed cursing the officer and the magistrate, and then took a stone out of his pocket and struck Yanderpool on the side of the head, partially stunning him. Before Yanderpool recovered from this blow, Williams seized bis club and struck him over the hand, shattering the knuckle bones. Officer Geo. Simmons, colored, then came up and arrested (Vdliams. When before- the magistrate Wil? liams cursed him. and treated him and the ; officers present with the utmost contempt. Se said that he intended to kill his brother, and had been lying in wait tor bim since six o'clock the night before; that he would kill him as soon as he was released. He was com? mitted to jail. Williams has partially served a term in the penitentiary for assaulting his mother with intent to kill. But we are wandering. We commenced . this paragraph with the intention of giving an account of Mrs. Catherine Hoffman, who ia all coarse, and has the devil in her. She iras arraigned before tbe Mayor yester? day to answer the charge of being drunk and disorderly, threatening to fire a pistol at a man, and also to fire ber house on Wall? street. She (with a bewitching smile, intended for tbe Mayor, who, however, having a ' Copper? head in bis bosom, stinging him to death," didn't appreciate it) stated that a lady called upon her early Tuesday morning, and she took a drink with ber and her old man. This drink made her feel very pleasant, and she asked her "old man" to give her some money to go to maiket with; but he would not do it, and abe took his toola into the yard and burnt them. A young man of fair attractive nee a appeared as witness against Catherine, and stated her misdeeds, showing conclusively that she waa moogh to try any man's temper. The Mayor, upon whom the bewitching smile of Catherine most hare bad a confusing effect, asked her if tbe witness waa ber husband, to whioh abe quickly replied, "Ob, no, your honor, he's too handsome a man for that." Tbe Mayor sentenced her to twenty days' imprisonment, whioh sentence abe quietly ac? cepted, only remarking to the said witness as a policeman led her out, "Now, pay that fine, dear, won't you, now."
