THE ADVANCE. On yesterday 1"HK NEWS (rave an account of the interview between the new and old Collec? tors at the Customhouse on Wednesday, and also the letter of the old Collector, Dr. A. Q. Mackey, informing the new Collector, Mr. Geo. W. Clark, that he would surrender the office to bim as soon as an inventory of the pub ito property in his charge, valued at about $409,000, could be taken and receipted for. About ten o'clock yesterday morning Mr. Clark, accompanied by air. Thoa. Bazien, for? merly bis clerk, and er-Alderman H. Judge Moore, aJvaneeJ into thc offi -c of the Collector, in which Dr. A. G. and Alderman T. J. Ma ?key were sitting. After thc salutations of the day were exchanged Mr. Clark informed Dr. Mac? key that he hid duly considered his letter of the day before, refusing to deliver up the of? fice of .Collector until schedule statements of all property on band were drawn a ad duly re? ceipted for, and said he hereby took possession of the office of Collector, and he would not per? mit him (Dr. ti.) to sign o'r act as Collector. Dr. Mackey, who was sitting in his easy ahair, with bis feet elevated at an angle of forty-five degrees, replied: "Mr. Clark, yon bad better wait until your permission is asked before yon presume to refuse it. Ton may sign yourself Collector of the Port or Tycoon of Japan, if that suits your fancy; bat I shall assert my authority as Collector of the Port until 1 have taken inventories of all property in my possession, and received duplicate re? ceipts for the same." Mr. Jlark then sent a message to Mr. Groves, Deputy Collector, requesting an inter? view in the collector's office. When Mr. Groves appeared, Mr. Clark handed him his commission to read, at the same time exclaim? ing, "lam Collector, sir; will yon obey my order*?" Mr. Groves mildly tut fl rmi y replied, "lam tho deputy of Dr. Mackey, and shall obey his orders, as my authority is derived solely from bim." Mr. Clark then said, "Ton are no longer Deputy Co tie c t or. " C0MTLOCK?TABY. After this side affair the colloquy was re? sumed between the ad interim and ad outerim Collector, during whioh Dr. Mackey explained kia position by the following illustration : "Suppose, Mr. . Clark, that I shoold comply with, your demand, and should surrender the Customhouse without first making ont my scheduler statements and taking receipts from you for every article; then suppose that to? morrow you should order five or twenty pipes of brandy from the government stores into your own private * tore, and Bhould appropriais them to your own use. Now, I being out of office, would b9 powerless to prevent this transaction, while, at the same time, I and my bondsmen would be held responsible for the loss of this property, for I have receipted for lt, and would not have any receipt from you to protect me against the claim for indemnity. I rive this illustration, not in a spirit ot inuendo against you, but as presenting a supposable sase." Mr. Clark make some response to this when Dr. Mackey said : "Mr. Clark, the office of Collector of the Port of Charleston has here? tofore been held by gentlemen ; you have fur? nished a striking but natural contrast between their conduct and that of so ex-army sutler. I would not and could not surrender the pro? party in my eas tody without receipts, even to a man of honor, still less could I think of doing so to you who are a very bad specimen of that not very honorable class of men, the army raters, iTJ>EB,lf Alf HACKET WANTS TO USS HTS BOOT. Mr. Clark in reply to the above not very complimentary remarks, said that Or. Mackey was ocurrilloua and impertinent, whereupon Alderman T. J. Mackey turned to bis brother and said : "Doctor, be kind enough to give me the order, and I will kick the insolent fellow out; to whioh Mr. Clark excitedly answered, "Ton can't do it." MB. CLARE IS PUT OUT. After this second side issue, Mr. Clark as? serted that be sat in the ofBue as Collector, whereupon Dr. Mack sj said it would be bis un? pleasant duty .to. ejeot him, and he. called for hu four boatmen, Augustus Boblinger, John Da vis, James W. Whipple, white? and Wm. El? liott, colored; who immediately came in, and upon being asked by Dr. Mackey whether they recognized him or Mr. Clark as Collector, an? swered, "We only recognize you, Dr. Mackey, and will obey your orders." Dr. Mackey then turned to Mr. Clark and requested bim to leave, telling bim that he was a trespasser, and he desired him to leave immediately, to which Mr. Clark replied, "1 will not leave, I am Col? lector." Dr. Mackey then took out bis watch and said, "I give you three minutes to rettie; if you do not leave at the expiration of that time, I Till eject jon by foxes. *' At thia pomt Alderman T. J. Mackey walked up to the table and remarked : "This matter is getting dramatic; it has reached the very stage with which it should have begun; I'll take sotes." Mr. Clark replied: "Tes, write it ail out; say that the order of the President and of the Commissioner of Customs is diso? beyed;" to which Dr. Mackey replied: "That statement, sir, is false." Mr. Clark then call? ed upon his friends to witness what was about to take place, and, observing the stalwart boat? men appearing as if anxious to seise him, said: "Don't let any more violence bo used than is necessary." As tho tbree minutes expired, Dr. Mack >y told the boatmen to "put that man out ot the room, but deal as ondorly as you can with him, treat him as if he wera a baby." t bo boat? men (hen Gathered around Mr. C'ar.k, who arose and asked for hts hit. Dr. Mackey then told the boatmen not to loush Mr. Clark if he was ready to go. "Tee," Baid Mr. Clark, "they mast touch me;" so they put their bands upon hie shoulder, and bo walked out of the door' and ont of the Customhouse; Alderman Mac? key sarcastically bidding bim good morning, Thus the battle ended for the day. CONCLUSION. It is worthy of note that the Commissioner of Customs, ia his letter to Dr. Mackey, re? garding hie suspension from office, instead of following the usual form of stating that Geo. W. Clark, Esq., "has been appointed Collector," Ac, strack oat the word "appointed" from the printed torn, and stated "G. W. Clark, Esq., has been designated to perform the duties of Collector." Mr. clark founds his claim to immediato possession maiuly upon thc fact that the Com m ssioner of Customs, in his letter or the 8th of July, above referred to, addresses Dr. Mackey as tate Coueclor. Yet wo nave been shown a lettor received by Dr. Mackey from the Comm --bi ou er of Customs, under date of July 20,1869 addressed to h,n as -'Dr. A. G. Mack? ey, Collector of ihe Port o. Charleston." 8AVANKAH Ta. CHABLESTOIt - THE MATCH GAKH TO TAKE. It would be impossible to describe the im? mense variety ot styles in which they are made. Some aro embroidered on the ends with flow? ers; others are of moite; then there, are the Roman' and the 'Watteau' sashes, tied at the aide, which, it la aaid, will be favorites at the seaside this year, as well as the black ribbons worked with colored bouquets. Very pretty little cravats are made to mat*h these sashes. We mast not omit to mention that velvet and lace are the trimmings principally in vogue at the present time. The diadems on the bon? nets continue to be worn very higb, and mach trimmed with flowers and feathers. Blonde and tulle are the most in request, but many elegant fanchons are made of rioe straw, trimmed with bouquets of feathers and flow? ers. Thus a fanchon ot rice a*.raw"odged with blue satin and blonde, with a bouquet of blue feathers, in the centre of which was an exquisito toa rose. Brides of blonde blue satin, fastened by a bow. Another edged with a small wreath of variegated leaves, with a bow of pink ribbon on the top, forming the centre to a bouquet of ] small white feather?, Brides of white blonde, fastened by a bouquet of leaves and small pink bow. The hats of the present season are ex? cessively elegant and varied in shape and trim? ming. Flowers and feathers are used in pro? fusion; still, in skilful hands, with such mate? rials, a graceful coiffure is secured.'' THE HOUSE OF H. BISCHOFF & Co.-The alter? ations and repairs going on for some time in the tine building ou East Bay, occupied by H. Bis? choff A Co., were completed yesterday, and the whole estabUshmont is now one ot the largest and most commodious in the Southern States. The main building, fronting on the Bay, one honored and thirteen feet deep and forty-seven feet wide, is three stories high. In the base? ment, which is kept dry by an ingenious ar? rangement of pipes and drains, hage casks of | bacon and pork are stored. In the main store, on the ground floor, flour, eagar aud other groceries are kept. Un tho second floor are the liquors and winos of all kinds and the finest qualities. On the third floor bagging, rope and ales aro stored. But the great fea? tures of tho building is the extension or uew slorehouao which rons from the rear of the main building clear through to State-street, lins exteusiou is one hunched and ninety-six feet long, by forty-seven feet wide. Ibo fl >or iog and roofing ure of the moat substantial kind, and tho skylights are so contrived thut ibero is Always plenty of light and plenty ot' | fresh air. The floor is laid at a slight angle, so that molasses and sugar leaking from the barrels will run into a vat instead of running to waste. The long rows of hogsheads and barrels make this new building a goodly sight. To give some idea of the size nf the estab? lishment, we may mention that its total length is three hundred and nine feet, with a width of j forty-seven feet. A tram-wuy runs through from street to street, ann trucks rolling upon this allow heavy weights to be moved with both rapidity and ease. The work has boon done by Mr. Albert Elfe, the contractor and builder, of this city, and ho has reason to bo gratified at the rea ul: of his la JOTS. From wbv we have said, it wi I be seen that H. Bischoff & Co. aro go-ahead people. We hope that they, and all our merchants, will have this tali raoie trade than tboy cm t..ko care of. PR?SENTATION.-The semi-annual anniversary of the organization of the Stonewall Fire Com? pany was celebrated, on Wednesday evening, by a handsome "punch" entertainment at Ma? sonic Hall. The Chief of the Department, Board of Firemasters, representatives from the Vigilant, Palmetto, and other companies, were present. In the course of the evening the handsome silver trumpet, won by the Stonewalls at the recent Fair of the Washing? ton Light Infantry Association, was presented to the President, G. Lamb Buist, Esq. As a token of well deserved esteem he likewise re? ceived a beautiful silver wine castor with gob? lets. vice-President Boinest was the medium of pr?sentation in both instances, and per? formed his duty with taste and grace. Speeches were made by MCBSTS. Buist, Nathan, Pmck ney, Strobe!, R. W. Seymour, and others. INTEBBSTTNO EXERCISES.-The distribution of ptizes to the pupils of the Academy of the Sisters of Mercy, took place in the hall of that building yesterday afternoon. The ball was tastefully decorated with ever? greens and flowers, and with pictures and works of art executed by the scholars, present? ing a most attractive appearance. About fire o'clock the scholars marched into the hall, which was already nearly filled with their re? latives and friends. The exercise?.' were commenced with a few introductory remarks from Rer. Father Ber? mingham, who, io conclusion, introduced Mr. Edward Lafitte. The prizes were theo dis? tributed to the scholars by Hr. Lafitte. Near? ly every scholar received a prize, to which, if we Judge from the profloieocy displayed by them yesterday afternoon, they were justly en? titled. The difficulty in obtaining a correct hst of the names of the recipients of prises, is tho cause of the non-appearance of any of them in this account. The recitations by the girls, and the compo? sitions in both French and English, were ex? cellent, and received, as they deserved, the commendation of the large assemblage pres? ent. The exercises, which were of a highly inter eating character, closed at a late hour last evening. The high degree of proficiency shown by the sobolara waa moat gratifying to their relatives and friends, and entitles their in? structors to the utmost praise. BUSINESS NOTICES.
