The thermometer, ia the after? noon, stood at 92 tn the shade. Late ia the after? noon the atmosphere waa cooled by a brief shower of rain, daring wbioh a high wind pre? vailed and blew dowe fences and tore off Isrge branehea of trees in various portions of the city._ YACHT RACE.-The proposed yacht race on the 24th of this month will doubtless be an interesting affiir. Perhaps the Savanoahians wouldn't object to pitting the Jane L., Rain? bow, Minnie, and other yachts, against the Cleanor, Mary Ella, Maggie Mitchell and -others, here. Bring your yachts over, we will promise you a good raoe, and a good beating if possible. _ THB POLICE DEPARTMENT.-It is reported ?with what truth could not be akoertalned, that the police force will be increased to two boo .dred members; that th? It ia ap parent to ovary ono that the present force is not sufficient to properly guard the city, and it . Should be increased. * ONE THOUSAND A TSAR.-There were any '.?umber of porsons who desired to serve tbe .public in tbe capacity of City Inspector, and much money was spent, ohampagne and other liquors drank, and callousing done to *eoure the offi co, the nadir y of which is one thousand a year. Oar fr?ouds io the coan tr y who desire to ob? tain light reading for the warm weather, at strictly popular prices, are referred to the ad? vertisement of Mr. O. O. Righter, the very en? terprising and trustworthy King-street dealer in books and periodicals of all kinds. His list will be found to include something to suit every taste, and it seems to ns a marvel bow he can afford to send his books by mail over the oountry, post-paid, at tbe ridiculously low prices named._ A RESIDENT OF THIS CITY, who bas suffered from burglars, discovered yesterday, one of their plans to obtain entrance to houses that have been spotted. A negro lad entered the gate and asked for a drink of water whioh was given to him. When leaving ho slipped into the cellar, and made his exit at the street, leaving the cellar door open. This was fortu? nately discovered in time to prevent a night entrance by that means, but the circumstance is a warning to housekeepers to guard their premises from all intruders. CROPS IM GEORGIA.-Tho Macon Telegiaph, of Sunday, says: "As we get into the critical months am) ?tag?s ot: tue crops, complaints multiply, although still quite exceptional. A large portion of central and southwestern Georgia is still blessed with timely and suffi? cient showers; but there are localities which aro, or wore by last accounts, suffering trom drought, and the people are extremely im? patient of this drought on account of tho criti? cal stage of tho oom crop, whioh makes rain peculiarly necessary. Coin is now earing-the gram is forming and rain is essential to a satis? factory product. As tor cotton, it is as yej entirely healthy and promising. Scattering complaints of rust, boll worm and caterpillar oome to us, but we think they are groundless or at least with very insufficient foundation. The crop is full of extraordinary promises; and nothing has yet occurred to impair the pros? pect." CHOPS UT THE STATE.-The Clarendon Press reports that some parts of tint county have been favored with good seasons and ootton looks finely, some of it bidding fair to make a bale to the acre, while in the lower part of the county they have had no rain for weeks and it is difficult to get water even for stook. Gentlemen from Liberty Hill, Kershaw County, report but one seasoning rain in seven weeks. Corn and ootton are both suffering from the drought. The Lancaster Ledger reports the crop pros? pect in that county encouraging. The oorn, though small, is quite promising, but just now suffering somewhat for rain. Cotton is grow? ing in some localities very fast, and in others is at a standstill on account of the dry weath? er. Blooms have recently been reported from the Taxahaw settlement a's early as the 13th cf June, neatly one month ago. Io the immediate neighborhood of the courthouse cotton is at least three weeks later than usaal. The oat crop is said to be exceedingly fine this year. Tun UNIT?? STATIS GOUBT, JOXY 12-HON. GEORGE S. At tho regalar meeting ot Howard Lodge, No. 8,1. O. O. F., the fol lawing preamble and resolutions woro unanimously adopted : Whereas, It has pleased an AU-wise Provi? dence to removo from us Brother CoBMBxros B. WEBB, who departed trna life on the after? noon of Juno ll, 18C9, aged thirty-throe years and three mouths. What a solemn lesson doos this sudden death teaoh. In a moment of time be was called to an accountability be? fore bis Maker. On the day of our deceased brother's death, he was in the enjoyment of good health and spirits, when suddenly as tho sun departed from the western bills, oar warm friond and brother was callod from urne to eternity. His disease was apoplexy, that terrible and quiok destroyer of tho human family. Bat one hour and a few minutes was the duration of bis ill? ness. Truly it has boon sitd, "In the midst of lifo we are in death." And whereas, in the Performance of bis duly as an officer of this Lodge, he bad tho credit of faithfully discharg? ing its various and responsible functions. A tew days previous to his demise, he received thc semi nation for the Vico Grand's chair, the second honor in the. gift of our beloved Order. He possessed many good qualities of a strictly honest and generous nature, whioh endeared him to a large circle of friends. Having received a liberal eduoation, gave him a just conception how to discriminate bo tween right and wrong. Intelligent in conver? sation and unobtrusive in bis deportment, ho won for himself the respect of all who per? sonally knew him. Prompt m the discharge of his duty, and being 'fully alive to the im? portance of sustaining the great principles embodied in our mo.to of "Friendship, Love and Truth," his hand and heart was ever ready to relieve a distressed brother, and to assist the sorrows of the widow and the or? phan, whioh alone distinguishes what consti? tutes a true Odd Fellow. But he is gone to the silent tomb, leaving a wife and four orphans to deplore bis loss. As a husband he was kind and affectionate-as a father he was devotedly attached to his chil? dren; therefore, be it hesolved, That in the death of Brother 0. B. WEBB, this Lodge hos sustained the loss of a useful member, anA the Order a worthy brother. Resolved, That os a token of respect for our deceased brother, this Lodge be clothed in mourning for the apace of thirty days. Resolved, That a copy of this preamble and resolutions be forwarded by the Recording Seorotory to the family of deceased, expres? sive of our sympathy, and condolence in their melancholy bereavement. - , Resolved, That a blank page in our Minute Book be dedicated to his memory. ?Resolved, That these proceedings be pub? lished in the daily papers of the city.
