CARPENTER, JUDOS, PRESIDING.-In this oourt yesterday a number of civil cases were disposed of, but none of general interest. THE FOURTH OP JULY A>D BANK USAGES. The paragraph which wo published the other -day correctly states the law in New York in regard to notes falling due on or about the fourth of July. But such is not the law nor the usage of the banks in South Carolina. THE BALTIMORE STEAMER sailed at one o'clock yesterday, carrying a large cargo of cotton, rice and Bundries for Baltimore, Phila? delphia, Bos.ou, and the cities of the North? west. The first shipment of rosin from Charleston to Chicago is on board the Mary? land this trip. BEFORE THE MAYOR, yesterday, were eight .persons who "bad imbibed too freely of "fusil oil.'' Among them was one poor fellow whs, while asleep, was robbed of his pocket book, hat, ooat and vest. In addition to these .serious troubles, he had to pay a fine of $5 for getting drunk._ DRUG LABELS.-We desire to call the atten? tion of druggists in the oity and throughout the State to the peculiar facilities of THE NEWS ? Job Office for printing all kinds of drug labels, proscription blanks, Ac., at the shortest no? tice, and in a style unsurpassed anywhere in the' country. Our stock of cuts, borders and fancy type is unusually large and choice. Call and examine specimens of work. A COOL DRINK. -One of our exchanges has a novel recipe for a pleasant summer drink. We have not tried it. but it may be good : "Take ? spoonful of whiskey and drop it care fully ou the bottom of a wineglass; then take a -quart of water and throw it out of the window, and add more whiskey to that in the glass. Taste to soe if strong enough. If so, add more whiskey. Let this preparation stand till you are dry, and then drink it olear." Jones, who bad been oonvioted in one of the lower counties in this State of murder, and sentenced to ten years in ?no penitentiary, but who was a short time since detailed as a servant at the Superintend? ent's residence, and permitted to be at large, beat bis wife a lew days since and left for parts unknown. Another convict, whose name we did not learn, escaped from tho guarda few mornings.since ond made tracks through the, oity to the Fair Grounds, trampling down the .colton planted there in his route. He chang? ed his striped dress fora United States sol? dier's suit, while running, which created con? siderable merriment among those who Baw bim He has not been recaptured as yet." BURGLARY.-Late on Wednesday night last ?the ladies of Mr. Wool's family, residing on East Bay, just north ot the "burnt district," were aroused by some one moving about the .'house, and gave the alarm. Mr. Wood arose, and on looking sronnd observed a negro mov? ing about. The negro ran off, hotly pursued by Mr. W., but by jumping over a fence into an adjoining yard he managed to effect his es ?.cape. Mr. W. then proceeded to fasten np his premises, and in doing so observed that the paint shop of Mr. A. 8. Freitaa, near by, was open. An examination showed that the looks had been broken, and everything inside waa in confusion. Mr. F. lost only a ?mall amount of money which was in his drawer, but the bur? glars, in searching for valuables, had thrown sit of his goods in a terrible state of disorder. Mr. F. had Just paid hi s taxes, and is rather put ont that he had paid to have his property protected, but, as shown, it was entirely un? protected. This makes tho second time that be ha? beeil robbed. 6 PERSONAL.-Ex-Governor Jenkins, of Geor? gia, and family have gono to Europe. The host of friend? ot General A. O. T. Lovett, member of the detective force, and John W. Slawson. It is asserted that a box of Eu Thu Nika-the colorod people's friend,as it rendera woolly hair pliable, softening and straightening the knot? tiest of it-bas boon received here, and the Fourth of July celebrationisia will appear without curly hair, a distinctive mark of their race. Officer 8. J. Coates, of the detective force, is running for tho office of Harbormaster. Tho interest due yesterday on tho city six per cont, stock will bo paid by tho City Treasu? rer, on and after the nth of this month. W. A. Quinn, a member of the detective force, is a candidate for City Sheriff. Thoa. A. Cnragher is a candidate for the as? sistant assossorsliip. Yesterday Captain Habenicht received from tho Secretary of State a communication noti? fying bun of his appointment as Commissioner of Pilotage. Nearly every member of the detective foroe is applying for a city office. Mr. E. Baynard Seabrook is prominently spokon of among tho Republican party gossips for the City Attorney ship, and will probably be elected. Messrs. H. Cobia & Co. are reconstructing the budding adjoining their place of business in Vendue Bange. Mr. H. Cross is doing the briok work, and Mr. D. G. Wayne the wood work. The Charleston Post of the Grand Army of the Republic will shortly establish another post exclusively for the colored men. The awning frame, erected by Mr. C. Werner for Messrs. Paul, Welch & Brandea, in front of their house on East Bay, is so tastily finished, and at the same time so light and elegant as to attract general attention. Aa misery loves eompany, it may be some satisfaction to our oitizens to know that on yesterday the thermometer in Columbia stood at 102, and in Savannah at 9S>. The material of the Ohariestoner Zeitung was purchased yesterday by Messrs. Brokmann & Beyer. __ THE POLICE FOBOK-THE CANDIDATES FOB CAPTAIN AND LIEUTENANTS. -It is generally understood that at the meeting of Counoil on Tuesday night next, called especially for the purpose of electing city officers, the entire ses? sion will be occupied in discussing matters connected with the police department, and will result only in the election of the officers for the foroe, viz : a captain and three lieutenants. For'tbe office of Captain, H. W. Hendricks, B. W. Willoughby, H. H. Hicks, C. B. Sigwald and Wm. N. Taft are, we learn, candidates. Hendricks is at preoent tho captain of the force ; Willoughby is an ex-officer of the Fed? eral army ; Hicks was formerly a deteotive officer ; bigwald was, at one time, captain of the foroe ; Taft is an ex-lieutenant of the third Rhode Island battery. Each faction of Council held a caucus on Wednesday afternoon, and resolved to unite on Major Willoughby. Those who have counted noses state that on the first ballot Willoughby will get seven, Hendricks six and Sigwald five votes ; on the second ballot the votes for Sigwald will be cast for Willough? by, which will elect him. * For the office of Lieutenant there are num? erous candidates, but so far aa we are able to learn, no agreement baa been made between the factions, and, therefore, who will be the lucky ones is still a matter of doubt. Among the candidates are A. E. Philippi, a member of the detective foroe;- Holloway, a col-, ored member of the polioe force and a eon of Alderman Holloway; John Monaghan; Orlando Levy, ex-lieutenant of the foroe. Very few straw bonnets are worn this summer, although the fashionable milliners display tastefully trimntWd styles that are charming enough to please the most fastidious. The preference is given to lace, tulle or crape. The fluted straws are a novelty this season, and the rows of upright fluting across the top are sep? arated by narrow ribbons or satin folds. The Fanchon is no longer the fashion, the present style being the diadem shape, which, with its coronal of leaves and flowers, is very becoming to a pretty face, and adds a charm to a plain one. The most popular style of hat for travelling in the country among the mountains, or for fishing, is the medium width brim, with a scarf | of gauze or lace that can be used as a veil if | desired. But for seaside wear tbe very wide brim is in demand, aa it affords as much shelter from the sun as a paras tl. JB USINES/} NOTICES.
