Caldwell, Jr., is now canvassing the city, as the agent of Mr. John Russell, for subscribers to Admiral Sommes' work, " Service Afloat." COPY RIGHT GRANTED. -Mr. Wm. R. Schmidt, of this city, obtained a copyright yesterday for a book entitled, "Fenianism, the legiti? mate child of Despotism, proved by the evi? dence of seven centuries." EXECUTION AT DARLINGTON.-Cyrus Coach? man (colored) is to be hanged to-day, between the hours of ll A. M. and 2 P. M., at Darling? ton Courthouse, for the murder of Robert P. Sugg s near Florence, on the 10th of January last. MAB VIN'S SAFE.-The safe made by Marvin & Co., of New York, for THE NEWS office, is a fine specimen of the work' of that well known firm. It is one of latest pattern, with the combination lock, and is very handsomely finished. W. M. Bird & Co., Ho. aw East Bay, aire the agents for these celebrated safes. FRIEND-STREET.-The shocking condition of this thoroughfare for the residents in the south western portion of the city, is the subject of much complaint. It is without a sidewalk and rugged throughout, and needs overhauling badly. Even a wooden curb filled in with earth, would be better than none. Something cer? tainly should be done for the improvement of Friend-street at an early day. DRUG LABELS.-We desire to call the atten? tion of druggists In the city and throughout the State to the peculiar facilities of THE NEWS Job Office for printing all kinds of drag labels, prescription blanks, &c, at the shortest no? tice, and in a style unsurpassed anywhere in the country. Our stock of outs, borders and fancy type is unusually large and choice. Call. and examine specimens of work. THE WILMINGTON AND MANCHES TEE RAIL? ROAD.-Jud ge Carpenter, upon the application of the President and Directors of the Bank of ! the State of South Carolina, has enjoined M. JK. Jessup, trastee, from making sale of the ?property of this railroad, and has enjoined the Wilmington and Manchester Railroad Company f com delivering to any person the property now in the use and charge of the company. Upon giving ten days' notice, a motion may be made f yr tbe dissolution of the injunction. PORTRAIT PAINTING now-a-days is reduced to a science, and the artist, by the as? sistance of the camera, is enabled to promise arith absolute certainty a likeness that will be perfect in its fidelity to the origina!, and at I she same time far leas costly than first-class ^portraits in oil have usually been in the past. A striking instance of the late improvements1 in this particular department of art may be seen at Quinby ? Co.'s Photograph Gallery, where lite size portraits of two old and well known citizens of Charleston are temporarily on exhi? bition. These are executed in oil on canvass a\nd while admirable in coloring and expression, possess a perfection of outline that skill, how ?ver eminent, unassisted by natural science, could hardly hope to attain. We learn thai the portraits were painted in New fork from photographs by Quinby ? Co. They are well worth a visit. REPORTERS' CRUMBS -It is rumored that a well known colored professor of the tonsorial art, will soon obtain a beith in the Custom? house. What next ? A much needed flag-stone crossing has been laid from THE NEWS office to the opposite side? walk, Afternoon service in St. Miehaol's Church, will, on and after next Sunday, begin at six o'clock, and continue at that boor until further notice. G?n?ral O'Neil left for Angosta, yesterday afternoon, and will lecture there, and thence proceed to Savannah. There is a fence lying on the sidewalk hi Broad-street, near King-street, which is a con? siderable annoyance (especially after dark) to passersby. The sexton af St. Miohael's Church eom ' plains that the graveyard Of that church ia fre? quently robbed of flowers and plants, and warna trespassers that they will be dealt with according to law unless they desist. Henderson Jones, colored, has escaped from .the penitentiary, and is still at large, The remains of the late James Murdoch will be consigned to their last resting place to-day In the Unitarian Churchs Ard, Arohdale-strset. Tbs hotel arrivais now ara unusually light. Th* l>i?ntal goods s??d by S??lea Drain ?ee terdaybronghtbi?^ Wfesw $eest?s --come from? ROBBERY.-Tho tailoring ostabHabment of Robert Hare, colored, Meeting-street, near Wentworth, waa broken into yeaterday morn? ing, at two o'clock, and robbed of a quantity of material and made-up clothing. The per petratore of thia act are known to bo colored men, aa they Were soen by a person from the opposite window. Singular to say, they were allowed to esoapo without hindrance or even an alarm._ THU POSTOFFIOB CCTLOBED CI?ESES.-The names of tbe negroes who are to bo installed as clorks in the Postoffioe respectively on the 1st of July and 1st of August, (in place of the brothers Gunn, two good white Union men,) are, George Lee, an ex-mo mb er of tho famous Club House Convention Ind a member of the Legislature, and Theodore Smith, (lighter ool? ored than.George, who is rather sable in hue,) formerly a paper-hanger in the employ of Mr. Kinsman, King-street. They both read and write "tolerably well," and are of average in? telligence. TUB NAVAL NONDESCRIPT launobed by Dr. Augustus Fitch, at the foot of Broad-street, on Wednesday last, is a novel kind of boat. It bas been tho result of long pains-taking on the port of the Doctor, who constructed it on bis own premisos in bis leisure moments. It resembles a small steamer, aud is propelled by rotary paddles in the oentre, on either side of which aro keels twelve inches deep. Tbe craft is provided with double rudders, which are conveniently manccuvcred by a capstan. Built for pleasure service on the pond, it has not proven lu all respects as successful an experi? ment as was anticipated, but will fully serve the purpose for which she was designed. Rxsiyo IN THE PROFESSION-Our theatre? going readers will not have forgotten Miss Kate Raymond, a young, spirited and rather petite actress, who some time ago was a mem? ber of Templeton's stock company, sustaining generally what are known aa soubrette pana. Subsequently, she attached herself to the hoise-drama connected with Lowande's cirous, and having made that kind of acting her spec? ialty, she seems to have achieved considerable success. We see by the Northern papera that she is starring it in the principal oities as "Mazeppa," "The French Spy," Atc. In Wash? ington, where she is now playiug, she is ad? vertised as "the dashing equestrienne and comedienne, Miss Kate Raymond," and in con? junction with "her famouB trained mare, Black Bess," seems to be drawing crowded houses.
